Can you guys make me a recommendation for a decent, middle of the road upper.

I plan on using it for multi-gun shoots and eventually service rifle. I already have a lower. I will also be shooting in the states, so, from what I understand it needs to be 16" long.

What sort of features should I be looking for? I was thinking something like a 16" Hbar, 1:9 twist, chrome lined, ???. I would also like something with the carry handle as I want to use iron sights to start.

Also, which retailers have stock of uppers, I have called a few local places with no luck. I am kinda looking in the $700-$900 range or cheaper, is this feasible?

Thanks.

Best to check the EE. I would recommend a Stag 16", 1/7 Gov't profile. 1/7 twist gives you a wider range of ammo and the Gov't profile will keep the weight down.... I'd think you'd be fine with any of the name brands though (Armalite, Bushmaster, Stag etc.)

LMT or Colt if you wanna pay a bit more.

:agree:

The above are the key points.

The only thing I would add to Mr. Eyebrows' post is that I'd consider a flat top upper; of course you can still use iron sights, but when the time comes to mount an optic, you're in much better shape IMO.

Between the EE, ArmsEast, Wolverine, Questar et al, there are lots of great options.

Consider?? I thought it was common knowledge to purchase flat top uppers. Only a fool runs a fixed A2 top.

Who the hell would use an A2 upper?! Good god man!

Follow the link in my sig line.

Please elaborate as to why an A2 upper would be preferred over an A3?? That's what I thought, you don't have anything to support your statement.

I never said one was better than the other, and I don't happen to own an A2 upper myself, but.............I do happen to know a number of people that do own AR's with A2 uppers, and I would certainly not call them fools, that is just me though!

Let me start again. I was little harsh for starters. Those who own A2's may have chosen them as a dedicated iron sighted rifle or had no other option available at the time of purchase. In the search for the most flexible platform as a first time AR buyer/owner, only a fool would choose an A2.

Sorry guys, I don't really understanding the difference.

Am I correct in assuming that the A2 has a fixed carry handle iron sights with no possible future changes and where an A3 has a rail to which a handle or iron sights can be mounted?

Yes and No. There are optic mounting options, just not as many as an A3

Buying new, generally speaking, you will get a carry handle with the rifle, you would then have the option, to remove the carry handle, apply an optic and a BUIS, if you so chose. Most AR's, generally speaking, will come with a fixed front sight as well, something to consider, if you are thinking of a dedicated long range rig, which I don't thick you are.

A1 - iintegrate ron sight with no elevation adjustment-borrowed from US military type classification
A2 - integrate iron sight with elevation adjustment to 800m - borrowed from US military type classification
A3 - borrowned by bushmaster for flattop, after Colt called their AR6720 "AR15A3 tactical carbine" - which is a 16" heavy barrel carbine with a flattop receiver. it comes with a detachable rear iron sight similar to the A2 sight.
A4 - Purely US military type classifcation for their flattop 20" M16 rifle.

usually, people just say A1 sight, A2 sight or flattop.

I thought the only difference between M16A3 and M16A4's were that the A3's had FA while A4's had 3RB, both being flat top.
