AR upper with no forward assist

Lot of emotion in this thread for no real reason.

Doctrine is often antiquated - CF Drills being a good example -
Years ago during the Yugo deployments, the idea of racking the LMG without clearing the tray was introduced - it got the gun back in a gun fight potentially quicker -- however it could also make a bigger mess.
Later that method became gospel - just not in Garrison.

I recall running TOET's for folks (all the while thinking this is dumb) - and then running modified drills for the guys later - to get the gun back into the fight quicker.

Tap-Rack-Bang however can like the LMG drill I mentioned above cause a worse issue, its a trade off, and most of the CF is not issued a pistol so transitioning is not a real option for most folks.

The Forward Assist is one of the same things in my mind, can it work: yes, will it work 100% of the time - No.

Unfortunately very few members of the CF get a lot of trigger time, and in the same manner, very few CF weapons techs get their hands the same guns over a life span -to see the wear parts and what needs to be replaced.

Manuals can only teach so much, same with courses, at the end of the day its getting out and doing. From that doing people come away with different experiences, some wrong, some right, and there will be variations of wrong and right.

At the end of the day if your still alive, and you did not put any holes in your buddies, your right.

You made a diagnoses on specific situation that i was actually in, and guess what you are wrong. What would your response be if I told you that the weapon i had was if anything actually over oiled and recently cleaned?????????? What would you tell me if i WAS ACTUALLY LEFT HANDED????So would my hand be off the fire controls then???????

What would you tell me if my AR had gone through well over 18000 rds in it's service life and the armors had not swapped things out like gas rings and other parts??? I guess in a big war TDC will just have another rifle of parts in his rucksack and gallons of his choice of oil always on hand well over seas...Laugh2

18 000 rds on a range.....

Riding around in a car is different from riding around in a LAV and both are much better than walking.

Walking/jogging up and down a civie range is different from burrowing into the ground or scurrying around like a rat because you're scared to death and people are trying to kill you.

I don't know many civies who suddenly get shot at while eating lunch. (Weenies and beanies dumped all over you sucks, not too mention how gummy that gets on a hot rifle.)

I don't use my FA. I use gunfighter drills. I still want my FA because there may be a day somewhere, some time, when I may need it. I carry a first aid kit too, don't use it much though...

Lots of people have opinions. Some of them are seriously educated ones. Some say they never use it. I say I've never needed to use it, yet.

Way to much emotion going on here. If you don't want one, don't have one. If you want one, have one. Does it really matter to anyone what someone else does as long as it is done safely?

I'll keep mine on my work weapon, it comes in handy when the ridiculous cocking handle the CF issues catches on something and pulls the bolt back ever so slightly and needs the little tap to go forward, and for press checks. I personally don't like pulling off a mag that I know has been properly seated, as our mags are often old and beat up.
For my personal AR I don't really see a need for it, but I'm not gonna loose any sleep over having it.

Does CF training have gaps? Of course it does. Any training does. To say otherwise is like saying that everyone that goes through Driver's Ed is magically an awesome driver. But what CF training does do is give people the basic skill sets that they will remember when they are deep in the black and need to survive. Does the CF shoot enough, or get as much training as it should? No, but not because people don't want it, but because of things like budget. Also, as nice as it would be to be able to take off and take a course whenever I want to, if it doesn't line up with a weekend I know I'll have off, or not interfere with the time I have with my family over the holidays, it isn't going to happen, but I am happy for the people that can do that sort of thing.

I have to admit that I haven't seen very many modern movies...

I would like to get a bunch of the fellas together and watch "The Park is Mine" with Tommy Lee Jones. Not many have seen it and it's an awesome movie.

My two teenaage boys and I just watched that a couple of weeks ago - another classic, even though TLJ is a left-1ing liberatical knee-jerk softshell gun hater...
