Does anyone make a quality AR-15 upper with no forward assist?

I've never used the damn thing in 20+ years. I am looking to build a super lightweight AR-15 and I am trimming weight anywhere I can.

I'd buy an old Colt upper if I could find one.

The new Mossy ARs coming out have no forward assist. I dont know if you can buy the upper only though. Older Colts dont have them either. There's a used Colt complete rifle without it for sale in my local gunstore if your interested. Other then that I'm not sure. Google is your friend.
 
ATRS does make a version of their billet upper without forward assist. A buddy and felllow CGN'er is using one in his current build and I have to say that it looks pretty good.

But that said, the ATRS upper will cost you roughly twice as much as an off the shelf forged upper from most manufacturers. so it all depends on how bad you want an assist-less upper.
 
Forward assists are basically pointless. Think about it this way, if the round isn't fitting into the chamber, why force it?
 
I don't know if they made it into Canada but a couple years ago in a gun/pawn shop in Montana they had a bunch of DPMS rifles, I believe they were called "Sporticals" or some damn thing. No Forward Assist or dust cover. Looked weird. Maybe you could find a used upper and build it to your specs

Now, now, we all know the Super Secret Mall Ninja Fraternity has approved the pointless bashing of the forward assist, as an effective way to make yourself look even more high speed and even lower drag. You can't fool us. It's also a great way to decrease your splits and improve your accuracy to under 1/3 minute at any distance:rolleyes:

Although I agree, there is a need sometimes when your rifle is reaching it's higher end on the round count and if you get sand in there the BCG will not go fully forward. I used it on an older C7 when in Petawawa years ago, traded off with an idiot for a private and he brought it back covered with sand...lol I cleaned most of it off and during our live fire exercise I had to use it several times. I think about 9 times at least.


Also during night time when you are tactically cleaning your rifle and making zero amount of noise is paramount, and the difference between life and death is on the line that feature is useful. Also when your AR has fired such a high round count that the BCG is completely covered with carbon residue and you don't exactly have time to put some oil in there that BCG can slow down to the point you will have that problem where striking the forward assist can seat that round in the chamber properly.But usually you will have other problems that will arise when reaching that point I have noticed.

Just a few things i have noticed, but i would say 90% of problems people have with AR's in the LEO/MIL world has to due with Armour's not keeping up with maintenance.

I have to say I kinda agree. Why not just rack another round. If you force it in and it gets stuck your really f***ed. In a defensive situation anyway. I dont think many use the forward assist.
 
My Colt HBAR has it and never used it, because I am at the range where it is clean and pampered. Also my DPMS panther never came with it, and I prefer that. Looks good too.

FWIW - on my Norky I have had two occasions when I have had the bolt not locking completely. Both times, I just gave it a tap and continued on my merry way.

I've always thought of it as an additional feature that really has no detriment to the operation of the firearm and based on theoretically sound reasoning. There is something to be said about the clean old skule M16 (sans forward assist) look tho!

Interestingly, the M110 does not come with a forward assist either and the Army seems to be unhappy about the omission. Regrettably, their reasoning seems to be "tactically" sound and one that almost all of us won't be in a position to test :p

Wrong. Just all wrong. I believe the CF has one of several chapters of the elite mall ninja clan that promote such stupidity. Forcing a round into the chamber is stupid. The FA has zero practical use.

It is not forcing the round in the chamber, but making sure the BCG is properly forward, sometime that is all that is needed, it works and can save you a second from doing unnecessary stoppage drills. It worked for me in that circumstance.So it does have it's uses, some times the BCG needs a little assistance going forward.Why extract a round for know reason that is by all means perfectly fine?

Basically having it is no big deal.For a sport shooter like your self it is not really necessary..:p

I dunno if I was asking the wrong questions, just seems like a feature that you might as well have since most AR-15s have them. Do you just prefer the look?
