AR Used Info - What to get and how much

Hi All.

I'm wanting to get an AR style rifle. Just for range fun. My hunting rifles are just too expensive to shoot at the range with my son. His 30-30 is not too bad but I have to stop at a box or I'm wasting too many $'s. I like the look of the 1500 rounds of 7.62/39 Cabelas had for $250 today.

So what should I go for with a budget of say 800 to 1200 for a used rifle in 223 or 7.62/39 or similar cheap rounds.

I'd like to over time customize the rifle to improve the look.

What do you guys suggest please.

Thanks.

For an AR15 in .223 there are so many options out there now it's hard to go wrong. The AR15 is my favorite platform to shoot but for cheap ammo, don't overlook the CZ858/958 when they become available again at "not EE prices". I know it's not AR style but my 858 shoots every bit as accurately out to 200 yards with Czech surplus as my American made AR15s with decent factory ammo. I've chronyed the Czech ammo and it's incredible consistent. You can't beat 7.62X39 for ammo cost. I've never paid more than $200 for a case of ammo - just got to keep an eye out when sales come out. Lots of accessories out there for the 858 family too -although personally I love the real wood furniture look mine sports.

X2 on a x39 Windham from Kelly's. Get one quick as they're the last of the pre-75 cent dollar batch, and new stock are at least $200 more. They're fine quality, and you can feed them for half the cost of .223. They feed fine with XCR mags. Install a heavy hammer spring to address the hard primers typical of ComBloc surplus.

Careful with 762x39, some of that ammo is corrosive, hence the spectacular deals, corrosive ammo is annoying. The one on special at cabelas is corrosive. I never buy that crap.

As much as I'm a fan of Windham Weaponry, do your research on x39 AR-15s and on replacement BCGs. x39 BCGs apparently do tend to fail at a higher rate than those for 5.56, judging at least by what I've read online.

True on the bolt problems, as the x39 bolt head shoulders are thinned out vs the 5.56mm.
I got a WWx39 from Kellys in the spring, and so far 2500rds of mostly Czech x39 through it. I'm happy with the rifle. I did pick up a "lobster tailed" dual spring extractor LMT Superbolt x39 through Questar as backup in the summer, but so far the WW x39 bolt is doing well.

A very worthwhile read on AR15 7.62x39 bolts with some pics:
