Ok I have to make a decision on which rifle to buy and use as my main fun, target practice rifle. Should it be the pricier AR format or the cheaper M14 (Norinco version)? Or any other suggestions?

Thanks

AR vs. M14S is pretty much an apples and oranges argument. If you never intend to shoot off-range or hunt with it, then both are viable options.

If you want to shoot off-range and/or hunt with it, the M14S is the only choice.

I've got both and they're both great. Your intended use will drive your choice.

I have had an M14S before with a USGI fiberglass stock. Really loved it, but I sold it as I was unimpressed with China and her agression towards Tibet at the time.....but I think Im feeling much better now. I do like the look of the AR but like the power of the .308. Would you say that the Norinca is a better rifle than the Springfield M1A?

You shouldnt have taken your anger on the m14, it wasnt its fault for China oppressing Tibetans.

you don't need a permit to shoot the m14, you do with the ar15. norinco m14s is only 399.00. most of them are good to "go" out of the box. you don't have to spend a lot of money to improve on it. spend the extra money on ammo.

If you only plan on playing on a bench at the range with the AR, it ain't worth it. However, if you get into service rifle or something like that where you can actually USE the AR for what it is intended, then it is a whole lot more fun.

M14 is a must have if you want a decent non-res. rifle for all round usage.

Neither are restricted down here - I have both, but I have not yet
fired the first shot from the 6920 - M14s are much more fun to shoot.

My girl can have the AR if she likes it, otherwise I'll sell it to fund another M14.

You really have to decide what you want to do with the rifle first. If all you do is shoot at the range, then AR15 hands down.

Should also ask, have you shot either rifle yet?

Yes I have shot both rifles. In fact I used to own an M14 with a great USGI fiberglass stock. I can't stand the chinese kung fu funny wood woo stocks. I did find the AR fun to shoot, its a buddies of mine, but still like the power of the 7.62 NATO round. I'm Spanish and could only wish to ever own a CETME similar to the mod. C my dad used in the Spanish Airforce so I think even though the black rifle looks way cooler I hang on to the 7.62X59 round for nostalgic reasons...lol. I can close my eyes and pretend its a CETME. Plus the M14s is less than half the price and I could always spend that on another fiberglass stock. I've heard that the chinese rifle often than not is as accurate or even more accurate out of the box than the M1A Springfield? Any thoughts?
