So, having pulled the trigger (ha ha, sorry) and ordered my first AR, I decided to look around and figure out which tools I need in order to properly maintain and service this rifle.

Off I went to the Brownell's site, and boom, $1000+ toolkit. Way more than I want to spend, and probably way more than I need.

I figured that it might be a better idea to ask around here, I'm a little overwhelmed by micrometer adjustable torque wrenches, handguard removal tools, barrel removal tools, gas tube tools etc etc.

So, rambling aside, here's the question:

What tools do I need in order to properly maintain an AR15? From my perspective, that includes the ability to strip it down to it's bare components and reassemble it safely and without damaging it.

Thanks.

To strip it for cleaning you don't need any tools, that's the way it was designed. Just the tip of a bullet to push the pin out for take-down. If you want to swap out parts for aftermarket you'll need a couple things though, stock wrench, screwdriver, forend wrench, etc.

You do not need to buy any tools to "maintain" an AR. To maintain it, just detail strip it with Mk 1 fingers.

All you need is a bore snake and CLP or whatever the favor of the day.

Until you put well over 10 000 rounds through it a cleaning kit and lube should be all you need with a good AR.

It is a military rifle and designed to be stripped far enough without tools by soldiers in the field.

If you want to start swaping parts that is a different story.

I have pretty much everything I need, ordered an armourers wrench (because I'd like to have one), and some TW25B to keep everything running nice and smooth.

Now I just need to find some bulk 223/556 ammo to break in my new baby when it gets here.
