AR with walnut furniture

Apparently, DPMS is doing some AR's with wooden furniture, according to gunblast's Shot Show coverage.

There were quite a few ARs with wood furniture at the show. They looked nice and I guess if you were using it for hunting etc then it would be as practical as any other wood furniture.

I've got $100 for the first guy who buys one of these with the wood then sands it down and paints it black. :D

I don't see anything wrong with it. Looks good. The AK family has been doing it for years. Given lots of it is "pressed wood" or laminate, the colour contrast is still there.

Nothing new there, the SP1 was offered with wooden furniture kits, it does look very nice, but not very practical.

The bids are over US$6500, so I doubt it is going to see combat anytime soon.
It will be an heirloom piece.

Okay I'll bite...

Why would wood not be practical?

Wood has served well on both recreational and service rifles for a very long time.

So why is it not 'practical' now?

John

Agreed. No one calls down the legendary FN-FAL simply because it has wood furniture.

No they call it down cause it weighs a ton... partly to do with the wood...

Wood may have at one time been the thing to do with AKs etc but I think pretty well everyone has agreed that polymer is 11 better.

Oh agreed. The reason polymers are used is because they are a step forward. But for a hunting rifle, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. As well, something everyone misses, one practicle advantage to wood is it "feels" warmer. When I have to sit motionless on my gun for many minutes, I'd rather have my hands on wood than plastic.

When labour, forest and clean cutting were cheaper than petroleum, it is just easier to put a piece of wood on a jig.

When he says "not practical", I think he's referring to how putting wood on an AR would negate it's role as a lightweight rifle. Not to mention, the polymer commonly used on ARs is very durable whereas wood could be more prone to rotting or burning or other deteriorative outcomes. This, of course, is dependable on the type of wood and quality of workmanship - as it could be as or more durable than the polymer. However, lightweight it would definitely not be.

I'm only trying to interpret his intentions behind the words. I may be wrong, but what I said seems the most logical.

Practicality aside, I love the wood stocks on that AR. If anything, I am not too fond of the Nightforce. Love the scope, hate the aesthetic combination (though again, from the practical side, love the scope :D)

The line between the upper and lower handguards is ugly. They should have done a better job of that for the price...

A friend in the US had a custom set of SP1 furniture made..with intentions of getting a group buy together..which didn't happen.
