So I have very recently purchased a NR AR10 style receiver set and will be starting on my first ever build. My question is towards barrels. I plan to use this rifle for hunting and shooting steel out to 500-800. I have a bolt gun to take me out to 1000+ in 6.5CM so I am building this to be a .308 fun well shooting rifle.

I am looking at 2 barrels. The Faxon big gunner 20” .308 that promises “near match grade” accuracy which I could get for $195 US and the criterion 20” match grade .308 for $289US. Is it worth spending the extra money for the true match grade barrel or will the Faxon work just dandy? As stated I don’t need a 1/2 moa precision rig as I have a bolt gun for that but hitting a good kill hit at 500 and ringing steel at 600-800 would tickle my fancy just fine. What do you all think?

Less than hundred dollar difference from the two you quoted, the answer should be axiomatic:p BTW true match barrels cost more than that.

Not , nearly match grade...:)
So does this mean I almost got match grade?

how much does that cost?

About $825 USD for a Krieger. You can order with a JP Enterprises Headspaced bolt for another $190.

As Jerry mentioned there are more moderately priced ‘match grade’ barrels available. McGowen, shillen come to mind.

Honestly I believe the term ‘match grade’ is thrown around too much now. And basically means nothing, just a catchy marketing term.

well..... I'm gonna need 2 barrels/bolts

one finished at 19" and chambered in .338 federal , the other I'll go 7mm-08 and finished at the same, 19" length.
building a midrange thumper for myself and a 7mm-08 coyote/wolf/deer hunting rig for the wife.

Unfortunately, "match barrel" doesn't offer the info it once did. Yes, there are many brands that use the "match grade" barrel that certainly don't shoot that way on paper...

For me, I compete and the target sizes are defined by the sports I play in. If I cannot hit the target on demand over the course of fire required, I don't get to podium. The brands of barrels I offer are used under this context and do very well winning at the prov/state and national/international level.

the entire barrel from the blank, bore, rifling, chambering and set up are done to the highest standards currently offered so yes, they will cost more. Those who are scored on every shot taken, lean towards this quality of product.

For those that will take the best 3 or 4 out of 5, or run surplus ammo, or have more generous targets may very well be happy with the generic "match grade" barrel so it really boils down to the needs/wants of the end user.

The Krieger AR barrel isn't going to cost that much in USD and I am happy to quote Krieger, Shilen, McGowen based on the needs and specs desired.

When you think about how expensive quality ammo is to shoot and the lifespan of a 308 or 6.5 CM barrel, a couple of hundred more for something that will reliably perform is chump change in the overall cost of a rifle and use.

Test fired a customers BCL with a new McGowen 6.5 CM swap..... just needed 1 group to prove it will make him very happy. And yes, that is a 5rds group at 100yds

By the time you get one from the US it will be about $500 and likely in September. Brownells will want an extra $250 US for the export licence. Don't go with them.

This thread might be of some interest.
