I'm considering buying an Armalite AR10 (A series). What magazines are available for them and what sources are there? I saw that some AR10 mags were on the exchange today and lasted a few hours or less.

Thanks for your input.

First make sure you have the right designation.

AR10A (the newest release) is called A because the so called DPMS/SR25/Pmag system is from the original AR10 waffle magazine design. This is the style DPMS, KAC, LMT etc etc use and is considered to have won the mag standard choice.

AR10B (the older more common version) uses M14 based mags. Think B stands for ban as the assault rifle ban in the US was the reason for Armalite going to this mag over their previous one. They wanted a reliable mag that was available in vast quantities pre ban. M14 mag it was. Although the Gen 2 AR10 mags are pretty nice.

So for the AR10B, Wolverine has them. Or get them imported, used etc. I usually wait for when they are on sale.

I am looking at the AR10A4, Wolverine carries them. I am guessing those are the AR10A (B?) series magazines at $65.

They've run into an AR naming issue. The A4 in this case refers to the flat top AR model vs the A2 with fixed sight/carry handle. The AR10A target and AR10a Super SASS are the only two models so far that accept the pmags. So yes the AR10 A4 model uses the B model M14 based mags. Which used to be $52 a piece but thanks to our dollar are now $65.

One other thing to watch out for. If buying B model mags used or old stock that's been in the back room of a store for eons, make sure they are gen 2 mags not gen 1. Gen 1 are clunky and not anywhere as nice as the gen 2. Also many of the reliability concerns that rival companies like to point out were due to the gen 1 mags. The gen 1 mags were replaced by Gen 2 in 2006.

There is now a Robinson Armament XCR-M .308 Win 10 Round Pistol Magazine - would this not work? I have a couple shipping from Wolverine and I'm hoping they will work with my Wyndham .308SRC.

Just "throwing this out there" as a new AR10 owner, Colt 901. I had Casey at TacOrd grind down the rivet on my Pmags as they didn't work in the 901. The Colt supplied Pmag had the over insertion tab, which til now I haven't found any difference in function with the regular Pmag. Just an FYI.

I've read that m14 mags can be modified but I'm not sure if I want to go that route, probably the cheapest way to go though. Thanks for the idea.

My new Armalite AR10 from wolverine supplies (A10A4CBFX) works flawless with the new XCR-M piston mags

I have an AR10A4 but it is an older one I think, it doesn't have the forward assist. I have yet to try out pmags or the XCR-M so next time I go to the range and one of my buddies has a .308 AR out i'll check.

If you get a riifle that uses DPMS/SR-25/XCR-M compatible mags Saskatoon Gunworks has 5/20 pmags in stock for $30 each and I'm pretty sure Tier One Armoury in Edmonton also has them in stock.
If it uses the Armalite pattern mags then Wolverine is the only place I know of.

Supposedly you can modify pmags to fit in an AR10 but it makes the magazine weaker......so if you use your mags hard or you think you might back over it with a truck, it might not be a good idea.
