Hi, want to run something buy you guys.

I put 120 rounds down range on my Noveske upper today. 420 total rounds since new. All factory rounds (Rem UMC/Win White Box/Fed XM193) I always run the bolt face dry when shooting.

When I went home to clean it I noticed a small "dent" on the bolt face about the size of a grain of salt along with a couple of shallow small slices. You really cant feel them running your fingers on the bolt face.

I have not really seen this on other AR's. Is this something to be concerned about?

Thanks

The weak points of the bolt are the thin material around the cam hole and the lugs. The face doesn't matter as mentioned. Don't sweat it. Keep blasting.

Could this be an imperfection on the bolt face from the factory and you didn't notice it until you cleaned it? The bolt face doesn't come into contact with anything but the case head.

I doubt this would be caused by just shooting 120 rounds with it. Though I'd connect with the distributor/manufacturer about it, it is certainly nothing I'd be concerned with head space.

In this case, if the bolt face has cracks and divots on it, I'd promptly replace it with a bolt from a reputable maker. Your bolt doesn't sound to be one that would pass QC with a reputable manufacturer.

I don't feel what you describe on your bolt face is anything that would have been caused by firing alone. Bolt faces do get eroded in a circular fashion around the firing pin hole, and after many more rounds than just 400, but not as you've described it.

There really minor, not cracks, but a couple of very superficial slices. I do have the circular ring which I am familiar with. I guessing my other concerns are cosmetic from what the others have posted. Its a Noveske bolt so im not to concerned that it has a crack. It was MPI tested so. Im just pretty anal I guess lol.

Those marks are character marks. It just means you are starting to shoot your rifle like it was intended to be, shot.. I wouldn't worry about it, my AR bolt has these as well. I took it to a CF weapons tech and he said shoot it like you stole it. No worries.

Bolt face pitting - sometimes it happens early in the game, and sometime it doesn't. I have had relatively new bolts that got pitted.

I suspect this kind of pitting could be caused by contaminants on the bolt face, or it could be corrosion, or combination of both. Clean your bolt face is a small way to eliminate the variables.
