I am presently working on a project gun, and I will need to make a hole and some tread in order to screw in the buffer tube but before I go farther in my project, I need to know if I can find a tap of the right size to make the tread so If anyone can tell me what tap I will need I would appreciate !

the tap is a 1"3/16" -16 Tap and you would need a 1" 1/8" drill bit. Both of those tools are pricey especially that tap, it was well over $125 and that drill bit is over $50 but save your money and go to a friend with a mill with a boring attachment and save some money. Good luck on the project.

On my USC-UMP project, i got an AR15 buffer tube stock adaptor made. It was much easier to get a machinist buddy of my dad's to put it in a lathe and cut the threads, rather than get the tap. IIRC Brownells does have the drill and tap, although as already said, pretty expensive. Find a local machine shop, bring him the info ( thread pitch and size) and ask what it'll cost to do it. It really shouldn't be more than 50 bucks for all the work, thats easy fun stuff for those guys :p

Keep in mine, the true thread specs of the buffer are not standard 1 3/16"-16. They have special pitch diameter and minor and major diameter specs, at least according to the documents I have.
