Looking to upgrade from my Norc. Been looking around at a few. S&W, Ruger, DPMS. Also the pre-order for the Bushmaster.

What is the best deal for a step up? Any others i should be looking at? And why?

Thanks.

I'm no expert but it's really hard to beat the s&w for $699 , one supplier even has free shipping on it . Can't remember which though

Actually I think I seen it for $649

Going from a Norc to a $700 to $800 rifle really isn't much of an upgrade, you are better off keep shooting the Norc and save up for something much better.

I just picked up a S&W M&P 15T, my first AR but for sub $1000 it has a lot nice features, far nicer than the Norincos my friends have. To me it's a great base, with a really nice barrel, to upgrade (bcg, trigger, etc) from. Good company, good warranty doesn't hurt either. My 2 cents.

what and why do you want to upgrade?

do you want a different barrel length? or barrel quality for tighter grouping?

better trigger? (easy and "cheapish" upgrade)

hand guard?

sticking with .223/5.56; or wanting a different caliber?

want lighter?

look at what you want, and what you don't like about your norinco (or is it the fact it's a norinco?) otherwise, i am with hbean. run what you have, save the money. i doubt you'll see much difference. nothing against the recommended smith&wesson, i don't doubt it's a great rifle. it is a flat side (no dust cover, or forward assist. one of which isn't needed in canada, the other isn't a benefit).....if that is good or bad is up to you.

on the other hand if you just want a second rifle, consider building? you can build cheaply, or stupidly expensive. you can build to your wants. you can build to suit your needs. start with the upper or lower; i half suggest the upper (unless the norinco trigger is that bad). with the upper you can change "more" about the performance, more weight to loose. you can get hand guard you want. with starting with the upper, it's all just parts, and once finished, easily shot on your norinco lower. and of course no waiting to get the lower registered........

I'm looking at picking up my first AR as well. Looking at the M&P Sport or an NEA. I'm keen to make a nice 18" rifle for the range, just not sure where the most cost effective start is specially if I'm going to end up changing the upper.

Went from a Norc....which was great...to the Sporter II. Two main reasons why I upgraded: Longer barrel and US made. Now, I do not have an issue with Norinco being manufactured in China, just that I was thinking...perhaps fantasising...that I would do a 3-gun in the US one day, and you cannot bring a ChiCOM firearm into the US. The Sporter II gets great reviews online, biased and unbiased.

If you're just looking for the bottom half - we're doing 10% off Stag Arms complete lowers - $369.99 -> $333

Complete with Stag LPK and M4 stock

Cost wise the Bushmaster deal is untouchable.
Around $600 after rebate and one sponsor does $10 flat rate shipping.
Is it the best value? That would depend on how particular you are.

Define what you don't like in the Norc and see if the other deals fix those issues.
Chances are they don't, at least not all of them.
A better value might come at a much higher cost, or might come in at a lower price point as upgrade parts for your existing gun.

I just have found that i have had to replace a few parts. Mainly spring, buffer retainer and barrel hand guard.
I have a couple Aero lowers already that need to get finished.
Just thinking of getting another one that is not Chinese.

Not quite true.

All the manufacturers geared up and manufactured based on panic buying after a Clinton win. What we're seeing is them dumping excess inventory on the market because Clinton lost, and the panic buying never happened.

Realistically, the rifles going for 700-800 from the big manufacturers right now, would normally be in the 1000-1200 range. There are some good deals to be had out there.

The S&W is the best value for the $$$ available in Canada at the moment. I've got a safe full of ARs and I'm still tempted just 'cuz.

$1000-1200 rifle selling for $700-800 now, means they were over priced in the first place.

im dont hang out in this forum much but im surprised no one said anything about NEA, SFRC was clearing out uppers at almost 50% off last 2 months.
plus the fact they are Canadian made.

i picked up a couple, so far they seem a real step up from Norinco's.
fit and finish is good, i have yet to break any of the 3 i picked up and no failures as of yet.
seem like good quality kit.

am i missing something about NEA or are they not a step up from Norinco?

I'm going to enjoy this...

well now im super interested!
went back a couple pages and read some posts.
it seems just like any other gun on the forums, 8 guys come in and say good stuff then 1 loud person comes in spitting nails and pissing vinegar.

Pretty much. For some reason, things can get pretty heated about NEA. I have some NEA parts (on my 858 and on my AR), but not a complete NEA gun. All I can say is, the parts I have, have held up well. A close friend has an NEA AR, and he's been quite happy with it.

But that's not exactly a scientific sample.

Honestly, though, if I was buying another AR, I wouldn't strike NEA off the list of potentials. I know they had some problems in the past, when they were first getting into the AR game, but that's not really shocking. It takes time to work the kinks out of a production line, especially when you're starting from scratch. A number of dealers I essentially trust to "not sell crap" carry NEA guns, and to me, that says more than most of the internet chatter you read.

I'm somewhat surprised a few of the haters haven't jumped in. There are a few people here who had bad experiences, and legitimate beefs. But that seems to have gone fairly quiet over the past couple of years. I suspect that whatever problems they've had in the past, they've worked through.

Does that mean you're guaranteed a non-lemon? Heck no. Mass production is what it is, and sometimes a dud will slip through the cracks. It happens even with the best manufacturers. But I believe it's well within reason, now, otherwise non of the dealers would want to carry them. High return rates kill margins for dealers, and none of them want to put up with that.
