Ok so I'm really confused, got into an argument with a guy at work about cleaning a gas tube in an AR15. I was always of the mindset leave that damn thing alone its self cleaning , while he's insisting to run a small pipe cleaner tool inside of it.

So now I really don't know anymore... Ideas?

Some carbon will accumulate in the gas tube and all parts associated with the DI system. I found for cleaning, just because I like a clean gun, that a touch of Wipe Out foaming bore cleaner works wonders. Gas tube, barrel extension, bolt head, any place where the carbon gets, comes off really easily with the Wipe Out. I am not a fan of brushes or scrubbing anything but my teeth.Laugh2

I like to use this on gas tubes:

Nothing accumulates in the gas tube these days. This is another AR rumour that dates back to the early days of the M16 before there were specs for ammo and ball powder was introduced with high calcium carbonate contamination in the propellant - WC846. USAOC did a study in 1965 where x-rays showed constriction and build up in the tubes. After the Ichord hearings and one particular test were fouling was observed in 1969 the specification was introduced to limit calcium carbonate to .25%. The fouling disappeared. That was 50 years ago, and propellant is much cleaner now.

There is, however, a great gas tube cleaning kit for sale in the states that does a great job of cleaning out your wallet.
