So when I say AR15 Handguards, What do you assume they are?

A. Standard A2 or Carbine handguards ( 2pc that snap together )?

B. RAS or RIS or something in that nature.

BTW, Rob posted this about an argument we were having last night. My main point being that no matter what you call it, it's still a handguard by function.

True, any tube be it a $20 plastic jobby or a $500 fancy RAS or RIS system still does the job of "guarding your hand" from the hot bbl, however for the sake of argument I tend to think of the plastic thingies when i hear AR handguards.

Cheers,

Alex

The first AR-15 hanguards were triangular plastic, had aluminum heat shields inside, and were both right and left. They were originally green and then the color was changed to black. The first rifles to introduce the round, symetrical handguards were the XM177-series submachine guns (first fielded in late 1967 or early 1968). These handguards were black plastic with aluminum heat shields inside.

The symetrical, round handguards for the standard rifle were introduced by the M16A2 rifle. The M16A2 was fielded by the USMC in 1982. The handguards with the Mil-Std-1913 Picatinny rail have only made their appearance within the last five years.

Note: the cheaper plastic, non-military specification handguards may be found without the aluminum heat shields.

Are there any full length "rail systems" for the 20 inchers out there?

A whole bunch actually. Every respectable manufacturer offers a 20" rail system: GG&G, LaRue, C-More, Troy, Midwest Industries, Samson and Knights Armament to name a few. I personally own the KAC M5 RAS which is a two-piece non-FF rail with provisions for mounting an M203 GL. It's a well engineered piece but is expensive and it's availability is limited as KAC is DoD supplier.

I think you titled them in you question, which should give the answer.
