AR15 receiver claw

Unless you are planning on building a whole pile of uppers (or lowers) in a row (one right after the other), I would say it is not even worth it to build anything, or buy the questar ones. If you are only going to build 2 or 3 AR's, over several months or years, probably better just to do without. If you plan on building like 20, then I think investing in the questar one(s) would seem more attractive.
However, to give bit of help, for a lower, I would take an old 30 round mag, and screw a couple stips of 1X2 to each side to support the lower, and stick the mag in your vice. For an upper, I would buy a couple cheap pivot pins, Fashion a couple "U"'s out of a piece of 1/4 ply (or other stock) making sure that each point of the "U" lines up with the pin holes, drill out the wood, , join the two "U"'s together with some stock for spacing apart, insert pins through one U then upper, then other U, put the lower part of the U's (with a piece of wood between the U's of course) in your vice. Off the top of my noggin, I think that may work.

I do. Making your own out of delrin on a milling machine would be a peice of cake.
Hell you could even do it with just a drill press, bandsaw and a router for the dovetail.
look at pics of the DPMS claw, and if you have the upper handy infront of you, start taking dimensions. If you dont have the upper infront of you get online drawings for the upper and work away.
It doesnt have to have high tolerances, it just has to fit so you can hold it in the vice.

Some of us like having the proper tools to be able to change out barrels, or Flash hiders etc on our own.
By all means if you have access to some machining equiptment, it can be fun and rewarding to build your own tools.
If you can use company scrap delrin material to make it then even better as it will only cost you your time.
Bingo ...I have every single tool necessary to build ARs on a huge scale, but the only people I would lend them to probably have their own anyway ...

The DPMS Delrin block is the best buy out there. I replaced my Brownells wrap around block with the DPMS so I could assemble any style of AR upper (Vltor, LaRue etc). The Brownells is limited to A2/A3 design.
Or you don't get them back and have to hound people to give them back.

I made an upper receiver block by routering out the faces of two 2x6s, filling them with automotive fibreglass body filler then clamping them around a receiver that was wrapped in saran wrap. It isn't beautiful, but given that I had two uppers to do, it wasn't worth spending a whole bunch of money on.
Do you know any vendors that are selling the DPMS block right now?

You can order most gunsmithing parts directly from Brownells as well.
I decided to experiment and save money too. Wood and wood glue. Even has a detent for punching out the front sight base pins and they fall into the holes for safekeeping. Good old 2x4s, a drill and dremel.
I am going to give this a try this weekend, but I think I will take a different approach. Something that goes inside the receiver

This arrived yesterday and it works like a charm! Very well made and effective. It's not cheap but it IS the right tool for the job. It also meant that I didn't have to remove the brass deflector on my 9mm to clamp it like you would need to with a block that clamps around the outside.
