I finally got a (used) AR15 sp1 yahoo!!! but...it wont pick up the third, fourth and fifth round out of the mag. I have 11 different mags and I have used my buddies mags and its all the same. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!! As a side note I have stripped the thing down as far as it would go, and cleaned, oil everything I could, I solved the ocassional misfire by cleaning the carbon of the firing pin shoulder, but I cannot figure out the failure to feed problem. I wonder if it is a worn whatchamacallit?????

What kind of carrier is it? What kind of buffer are you using?

Personally, and I know someone's going to jump in "NO DON'T DO IT MAN!" (Pussies), but I'd drill the gas port, as the rifle is short stroking.

It's the first and last thing I do. Works every time, WHEN DONE PROPERLY. PM smgcon on the board here to get the proper dimensions.

Once you drill the gas port you cannot go back. Hicaliber fixed his short stroking AR15 ( 10.5" I believe ) simpley by changing the gas tube ( from the pig tail to standard ). He still used a AR15 carrier and diddn't need a M16 carrier. It worked...

There are many ways of getting a AR15 to work that DOESN'T require a dremel.

I dont know

I thought When I disassembled the thing that the gas tube would come off so that I could clean it as well, but I never actually did any cleaning to the tube at all ( couldn't get it separated from the rest of the unit),could it be clogging up with carbon?

i'm sure if you can get of the pic the other guys can tell you what the carrier is?

as for the gas tube.. i've tried to clean mines by blowing compressed air (compressed air can thingy for cleaning computers) into the tube from the end inside receiver/chamber

It's an SP1 so gas port size is not an issue, it's old. Complete teardown, inspect all parts, complete service, replace:
-gas tube
-gas rings
-extractor
-ejector
-springs for above
-new buffer spring
Gun will work fine.

Ice,

It certainly could be. Replace it, and see if that works for you. Wolverine is selling Rifle Length gas tubes for $19.20 plus tax and shipping. Pick up some other little AR bits while you're there.

(Comments removed [by me], solution for the wrong problem)

Get some pipe cleaners and some brake cleaner spray. Spray down the gas tube ( dont be stinngy with it ), wile wet clean it with the pipe cleaners. That should logged out the crap in the gas tube. Check your gas rings on the bolt. Check for damage. Also clean the gas key on the carrier, make sure its free of crap as well.

do the above and you will be happy in your pants :)..... it is time for a rebuild anyway.

Good tips all the way around thanks guys!! I guess I better get busy now that I am "armed" with info. :D

While I agree that Icecold's SP1 will probably benefit from a rebuild, if it is short stroking, why only on the 3-5 round? Shouldn't it short stroke on the 2nd round too? Yet the 2nd round feeds consistantly.

It could be having problems on the later rounds because of the decreased spring pressure on the mags. The second round has enough spring tension to get the round in, but by the third round the spring doesn't kick the round up fast enough and the round doesn't get picked up. Just a theory.

Doesn't sound like a gas issue. Also,, I don't think you ever need to clean the gas tube,, unless while being stored,, some creature decided to take up residence inside it and died. The gas pressure should ensure that no carbon builds up,, it just blows it out.

Having the occasional misfire,, that you solved by cleaning the carbon off the firing pin?? That statement gives me the willies!!,, and with that single fact alone would lead me to believe you have a junker,, not taken care of,, and probably worn past where it should be.

Are the mags 30 rd mil issue type?,, or steel Armalite clunkers?

Dont drill the gasport!
The only time you would drill a port is if it is undersized - and that is not a reported occurance with SP1's.

If the previous owner used a lot of .22LR in a subcal kit - your gas port may have been partiall gummed up - but I agree that this is not a gas issue since the first two rounds cycle - but.
Try the empty mag drill - chamber a round from the mag (only load one into it) and fire the round -- see if the bolt catch is engaged - if it does you know the bolt is traveling rearward enough.
