I'm looking for a decent AR-15 stock wrench to remove a castle nut so I can switch out my end plate. Can anyone recommend something decent that works well and won't damage the nut when I take it off? I've heard mixed reviews about the DPMS multi tool (http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/details/7224/DPMS-AR15-Multi-Tool.aspx) carried by Wolverine. More specifically some users were saying the single tooth on the stock removal slot snaps off and the finish is horrible (too thick, rubs off easily). Does anyone have experience with the GG&G version (http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/details/10058/GGandG-AR15M16-Multi-Tool.aspx)?

The DPMS works best with the old style castle nut. It's less than optimal for the newer M4 style. No experience with the GG&G but it looks like it's got you covered for both styles.

If all you need is to remove the castle nut then it would be cheaper to buy just a stock wrench, they can be for $10 and up.

is the AR combo wrench something different than someone with a lot of tools would have?

IE I am a mechanic and have thousands of dollars worth of tools. Is there an oddball size or shape that normal wrenches, sockets, pliers, screwdrivers etc won't cover?

AR-15 combo tools I've seen all have at least something for the castle nut on the stock, the barrel nut, and cutouts for the flash hider and occasionally to attach a torque wrench. I'm guessing you could get away without dedicated AR-15 tools but it's convenient to have them all in one place and some parts like the castle nut and the barrel nut are easy to damage without the right tools (or so I've heard).

I don't mind spending a bit more on a decent combo tool as I imagine I'll get some good use out of it. Thanks for the advice guys.

As mentioned, the combo tool has a barrel nut and castle nut wrench. Something you can't replicate with your other tools.

If you're changing barrels or installing a buffer tube for collapsible stocks then you'll need one. For anything else your regular tools will work fine.

I bought the stock wrench from Brownells also. I like the handle on it. A bit nicer to use than the AR combo wrenches. But I have both and both are usable.

I have a Hammerhead AR tool that I ordered direct from the US manufacturer. Quality is A+, but keep in mind that aftermarket sling attachements like the Magpul ASAP might interfere because of the design of the tool that wraps all the way around the buffer tube.

We have Allen Gun Works stock/muzzle brake wrenches in stock.

They are $14 with 3 prongs and rubber coated handle.

Will also fit most brakes on the markets.
