AR15 Storage

So I finally purchased my first AR15 (Diemaco 15.7). I've never been into rifles but I guess I finally caught the AR bug.

I don't have a full-size safe capable of storing rifles, just pistols. I'm thinking of purchasing a pelican case to comply with storage regs, but the idea of long term storage in a hard case with foam kind of scares me due to rusting. Is this anything to worry about if I throw a few silicia packs into the case?

Stay away from foam cases like you said, go buy a stack on cabinet for about $100, they are always on sale somewhere.

Yup, spend a few bucks on a proper safe. It doesn't have to be fancy. Hell you could just lock up the lower if your pistol safe is big enough.

Haven't received it yet, making arrangements once I take possession.

Looks like a stack-on might be a good solution if the case isn't a good idea. I eventually want to get a fancy safe just not at the moment.

Lock it in a backpack if you don't have anything else. Then put a padlock through the zippers

A case is fine if you want to safe up for a good safe. I kept my first gun a Nork AR in a foam case in my closet for the first year. No rust.

If it's temporary. ..but a cheap plastic case from ct....remove the foam, drill some holes and you're good....

But yeah, a cabinet or safe is better for long guns

My first AR and handgun were stored, trigger locked in an old sks crate with a padlock hinge bolted to it. Worked for about 40 bucks.

Dollarama sells a product called "Damp Traps." I pick one or two up every couple months and change them when the bottom fills up. I store my safe in the basement while I renovate my house. No problems so far.

Don't know what truth there is to this but apparently if you use "closed cell" foam in your case you wont have issues with moisture

Personally I would never long term store a firearm in a foamed case of any kind. I think that is asking for rust trouble.

Crappy Tire frequently has sales on their Stack-On lockers. That fills the legal requirement as long as they're also trigger locked.

I've had one in a pelican case for about a year and zero issues so far

I bet someone near you has a safe that they can lend you, for a year or so. Until you know what you really want...some even in the same city....hint hint.

My Marlin 22LR was at my buddy's house for close to 15+yrs in one of those cheap hard plastic cases with open cell foam with a couple moisture muncher packs. I'd give it a wipe down with an old silicone cloth about 3x a year. Not a spot of rust on her when I got it back. I was lucky I suppose. Now that I know what could happen, I prob won't do that again.
