I was test firing my latest build .. 20" SPR(ish rifle) and experienced a consistent problem with FTF... possibly short stroking.

  • All mags are new (RRA 10 rounders with Magpul followers)
  • Ammo was Federal American Eagle 55

Usually at round 3 the rifle fails to feed the following round and it seems that the BCG is only partially blown back. Could it be the springs? or maybe a gas leak at the FSB.

i am using a YHM FSB and it was professionally mounted by VGS last year.

Any technical help would be appreciated.

BTW the 11.5" has had 0 FTF to date and has made me very happy :)

Shazam, after firing a couple rounds, remove your FSB and take a look. (I had this problem with my PRI flip up FSB). Check to see if there is powder residue where it should be lining up with the gas port in the barrel.
I had mounted my PRI flush with the contour on a RRA match barrel and it had the barrel's gas port only half aligned with the port in the FSB.

I agree. Your rifle is not getting enough gas to properly cycle the action. It is possible that the gas block/front sight is not alligned correctly. Maybe also check that your buffer spring is correct length. Although that is very unlikely to be causing your problem.

Thanks guys the FSb was my first thought as well. Next time I bring tools to the range. The BCG is new and gas keys are staked.

Will report back I have a feeling that there isnt enough gas to produce the blow back.

When it did shoot it shot well :) except for the hairline fracture I noticed on my MagPul PRS stock :(

BTW how do you like the TD Bipod, Is it stable?

The TD Bipod is great (for prone) but unfortunately I mostly shoot bench with this particular rifle and have found its lack of adjustment a problem... I have a short Harris Bipod in the wings ...

The TD Bipod will find a home on a US compliant 16" RECCE upper that I will eventually build for the lower CQB rifle :)
