AR15 Unwanted Burst Fire with CMMG .22 Conversion

^ I wonder the justification is behind rules like that. A local range here has a "two seconds between shots" rule.

I always thought it was because lots of people can't keep it under the berm after the 2nd or 3rd round, especially at a couple hundred yards and with full-power rifles.
Most places have a really close range area where mag-dumping/bursts and whatnot are allowed.

Keep it really clean and try some hyper velocity ammo, it should push the bolt back harder and reset the hammer properly.
If not then sell it to me for $50 ;)

We need legal 30 mags. Emptying 10 of those in a row must be pretty awesome.

Best i have done is 2 full auto mags in arizona. Quite fun. Scottsdale gun club.

****Update****

So I got a hammer with no notch and a reduced power hammer & trigger spring set. I expected the problem to be gone, but I was wrong. I started using my CMMG conversion kit with winchester white box and had very little problems. Only once and a while it would not re-#### the hammer. Then I switched to federal bulk and that is when the burst fire started. I noticed that the federal ammo has a lower fps then the winchester. I did some more research and found that cutting off some of the coils off the recoil spring of the conversion kit was a common solution. So off to the range again. I ended up cutting off 10 or 11 coils and now it works flawlessly.

So the trick is, buy the ammo with the lowest fps, then tune the recoil spring to that ammo and you will be good to go with anything. If you don't have the stainless conversion kit, polish the paint off the rails as well.

A light recoil spring if you put really heavy loads can cause the firearm to slam in the back causing damage if it's to weak. You can damage firearms with a spring that is to weak and a very heavy load. Many 10/22 have broken due to the recoil springs becoming weaker over time and the bolt slaming on the metal pin in the back (kind of a design flaw) To get that kind of damage it has to be a range rental gun most people will never be able to put the same amount of ammo down range.

danoiwan, I also bought the CMMG 22LR bolt conversion for my AR15. If I understand your previous post correctly, it sounds like you bought the BRAVO version, stainless steel. I bought the ALPHA version, phosphate coat from Questar.

I managed to shoot it a couple a weeks ago. It ran like a champ with my Norinco CQ-A. I had the odd FTF/FTE, maybe 5 out of 150 rounds. And these were all brand new mags, not yet broken in. So, I think it will improve with time. The ammo I used were CCI Mini Mags. I'm planning to try out some others when I get my LTATT at my range (Which at the rate I'm going, will be forever :( ).

mini mags are stronger than most so that explains.
They are some of the only ammo that will feed in my sig mosquito pistol.

REM golden bullet 40 grains works fine also. Might want to try it in your rifle, much cheaper than mini mags.

Shooting mini mags to "empty mags plinking" is a waste, to me. It's good hunting ammo.

I much prefer to just dump cheap box ammo.

But I don't shoot 22lr much anymore. I mostly hunt with 17 hmr, shoot CF rifle and pistol, all reloads.
reloading pistol with cast bullets is not more expensive to me than shooring 22lr.... I just dont shoot 22 anymore. I might even sell my 22 pistols one day, I never shoot those.
A cheap 22 rifle might be practical to carry in the woods for small game, just because it's light and I don't care if I slam it somewhere or drop it.
I used to bring my 17 hmr, and ended up damaging the nice wooden stock.

had this issue at first with mine, the bolt is not going far enough back for the hammer to engage the sear. Likely the lube you are using or not using, just exercise the bolt a bit along it's rails making sure it's not sticking and slides freely and the problem will solve itself.

Btw, and not to hijack the thread, but does the quality of the CMMG conversion kits (Alpha, Bravo, Echo) coordinate with their increasing price?

It's because they get idiots out there that don't know how to shoot and they start launching rounds over the berm while pulling the trigger as fast as humanly possible. The stupidity of few, hurts us all in the long run.

It also tends to disturb the more sedate shooters who like watching their heart beats through their high power scopes ... ;>)

The Alpha (non-stainless) kit has been discontinued by CMMG

The Bravo (stainless) kit now includes the brass chamber extension bushing which formerly was a $40+ US MSRP option - it is supposed to eliminate forward and rearward movement to insure that the chamber adapter stays rock solid.

The Echo kit includes a Forward Assist Adapter, which allows you to use the forward assist, an Anti-jam charging handle, and when you disassemble the conversion bolt the guide rod doubles as a cleaning rod to clean the conversion chamber.

Kits are available through our website here

So, does that mean that in the event I have troubles with a recently ordered 'Alpha' kit, I can upgrade? Sounds like CMMG knew they had a problem.

There's no design flaw with the Alpha kit - its exactly the same as the stainless Bravo kit without the brass chamber extension. Since it's parkerized instead of stainless it is a little hard to keep clean - since you're shooting 22LR it can get quite dirty.

The Alpha also come with the "older" style Ciener-magazine which didn't work with the BHOA, while the Bravo and Echo kit are supposed to come with CMMG's new "Evolution" Ciener magazines which have a longer follower and is compatible with the Bold Hold Open Actuator.

Good to hear! I watched several videos of the Alpha kit in use before deciding to order one for my wife's AR. No one had anything but praise for it. One guy did a review of several types of CCI ammo with his, posting the camera where you could see the bullets impact as he fired them.

I don't think that my Ruger 10/22 would do any better, and possibly not as well.

Are the newer mags with the BHOA feature going to be available? Could the older mags be so modified? I like the idea of the action locking back after the last shot on any semi-auto.

I'm assuming that the bolt hold open actuator is an extra option and isn't included with the Echo kit? In addition to the new Ciener magazines, what other aftermarket mags will work with the Echo kit?
