I plan to buy an AR15 when my RPAL is issued. I live in a condo and don't want to scare the "children" when I take my gun down the elevator to the underground parking. A rifle case is too obvious so I thought I would buy a piece of lockable hard-sided luggage and use that. I will transport the gun in two parts - upper and lower receiver. How long is the upper receiver on, say, a 16" barrel AR15?

My 14.5" carbine with Vortex flash suppressor and rubber pad on the stock comes out around 32"(?) OAL, collapsed. A 16" gun with no pad should be about an inch longer, depending on muzzle device.
It fits in a skateboard bag.
You can't beat it for discrete transport, IMHO, and there's no need to take it down into upper and lower.
The bag also fits a folder CZ858 with room to spare.

Actually, I think your idea draws more attention. Is it just me, or does that "discreet" case pretty much look exactly like what you'd expect a soft sided guncase to look like?
Thanks for the replies guys. 25" will fit into a standard piece of hard-sided luggage. BTW, I also checked out the "discreet" cases and thought the same thing as the poster above. As for the skateboard bag, I don't think it would fit my 53 year old image.

Great idea with the skateboard bag. I am still looking for this golfclub drivers bag that I saw at Sport Authority a few years back. It was made to hold only your woods, mahaps a 9 iron. It was padded and zipped up and was lockable. It would easily hold a scoped M-305. I think it had golfie type writing on it. You might have to wear purple pants and a yellow shirt when you carry it but it didnt yell gun.
Just wear baggy pants and put your ball cap on sideways.
The pants and ball cap are easy. Its the acting stupid part I can't get right. On the side, the "discreet" bags are far from discreet looking.

The discreet case is not shaped as a standard soft gun case, but sure, it's still a case. To me it's still the best option to securely carry a rifle in a good soft case.
If you really don't want to scare the neighbors, put a sign on your sport bag that says "There's is no gun in that sport bag" or "Vote liberal"...

The shape of the discreet bags isn't the give away. The quality of construction, external pouch shapes and sizes, colour(tan, green, camo) and in some cases the brand name label sewn to the outside are the clues to the cases contents.
maybe its just me but only reason I use a case is to prevent prying eyes from calling the PoPo and creating some drama. Oh, and for legal transport. outside of that the case is useless.
