Ok, so it seems that most of this forum has a real hard on for AR15's and i get it, i really do. But, why AR's over all the other black rifles...

They're the only one thats restricted by name, they're not really that cheap, they can be pretty cheap, but the cheap ones seem to be considered ####ty, and you end up dumping 500-1000 in stuff to make it awesome...

I'm not going to mention any other black rifles by name but basically its AR vs. the world

so i ask you why do YOU love your ar?
or why do YOU love the other black rifle you got instead of an AR (and which one is it)

I'm thinking its largely a choice based on aesthetics and well beauty is in the eye of the beholder

(incase you're all wondering yes, I'm having a really really hard time deciding which black rifle i want, i know the answer is buy them all but i can only afford one.... almost : )

I use them because they are as close as I can get to an DND issue long arm and they are accurate for service rifle comp. Also it is like a firearm version of meccano ;)

Why I like the AR--- I like the options I have to customize... I like how reliable it is... I like how easy parts/accessory's are to get... I love the idea of the design, I'm an engineer, to me there is a certain amount of beauty in it's design.. It's also one of the few black rifles available to me.

Why I like other black rifles-- I.E., Kel-Tec RFB, Tavor TAR-21, H&K G36, etc... I love the way they look, and I love the designs/how they work. Granted, I cannot get any of those rifles either :(

It's a combination of things, but for me anyway, it's the total customization aspect. You can have any number of uppers and lowers, barrel lengths, direct or piston and so many different stocks, grips, hand guards and other accessories that it's just crazy! The aesthetic aspect is certainly appealing as well, since just a few subtle changes here and there can totally change the overall appearance and functionality.

ARs feel so good in the hands ,they point very fast and natural , they are light and have great weight balance , top of the line ergonomics and very little recoil.. highly customizable, modular and easy to build yourself from parts. Their only downfall is they have a shorter service life than other rifles because the use aluminum in their construction and the direct impingement gas system makes the action dirty, They s**t where they eat..

because they're modular, cheap to shoot and cheap to buy compared to the alternatives, and easily available.

Plus we can have one.

If i could have a FNC, galil, HK91 or 93, fal, AK ect, that would be my preference, but i can't, so i have an AR.

THe xcr, armalite, swiss, are either hard to find, or bloody expensive!

Yeah, keep the internet myths alive. The US is still running 40+ year old rifles in service.

Arms East lists 20" ARs for $1400. If you want a rifle to match their reliability and accuracy you are going to be paying around double. The support behind the AR family in Canada is also huge, finding replacement or bling parts is easy.

Swiss Arms are good and accurate but double the cost
Tavor " "
Fn2000 " "
CZ858 cheaper but fails on accuracy and ergonomics
XCR fails on acccuracy, reliability and almost double the cost

Of course with ACR and SCAR coming one day we will have two more rifles that are as accurate, as reliable and double (or triple) the cost of AR15s already on the market.

My reasons:

Reliability, accuracy, ergonomic, lots of customization options, massive aftermarket support, 10 round LAR-15 magazines, affordable .22LR drop in conversions!

AR is the most efficient rifle - it is the most light weight of all and has very reasonable durability and reliability. It is the easier rifle to field strip and maintain.

A barebone AR comes under 6lb -

You do not have much understanding of AR design or in general the design concept of barrel extension employed by AR15. Most of the modern western weapons borr0w AR15's concept of using barrel extension for bolt lockup.

Aluminum will not shorten the life if anything it will prolong it as it does not retain heat it dissipates it very quickly.

Thanks guys, lots of interesting info on AR's here, seems the biggest reasons for owning one are:
1) reasonably inexpensive
2) availability of parts
3) they're basically military services rifles

the only down side thus far seems to be its restricted (which is really the only hangup for me still) i like gopher, rather i dont like gopher, well i'm indifferent to them but they're more reactive than paper targets :)

Now assume all black rifles cost the same, would you still chose an AR?

CGN has a hard on for AR's because they have really been the only main black rifle canadians have had since all the restrictions and s**t came in to place to ban all black rifles thanks to that asshat in Quebec. If you look at the black rifle scene you realise pretty much most of all black rifles only came to our market in the last few years such as the tavor, XCR, PS90, RFB, Benelli MR1, ect ect. They havnt been around long enough and there arnt sufficient quanities yet for them to have a large and devoted following as the AR.

By the way my hard on is for anything that pisses liberals off. That new kel-tec shotgun fits that bill nicely. Its definately a 9 out of 10 on the shwing scale for me.

I've been dancing around getting one for a year now. Being restricted sucks but having a rifle with a short barrel and using 10 round mags is just too much to pass over. A 10 lb M1A with a 26" barrel is a little beefy and long for a tactical rifle shoot but the 5 round mag makes the whole event blow dead dogs. That is THE most retarded reg I've come across. It's like saying you can only put 10 liters of gas in your car at a time.
