AR15 vs All the other black rifles

Why is it that (most of us) are attracted to women? its tough to find that one thing to put your finger on and identify, but overall to begin with the AR is just flat out ###y.

when i first saw the AR at around age 12 i was overcome with these strange feelings inside... i just wanted to pick it up and touch it.

Like women, ive had many of them and there always seems to be another that manages to catch my eye... and my heart... and my wallet

:agree:

The AR platform took looks and field mantainance to an apex. Seems like every other "Cool" looking AR thats newer never seems to surpass the looks.
A couple of other reasons for me and i am just recent to owning one is that it's our "Service Rifle", my son's Service Rifle and when Canada had the FN , I trained with it and owned one for Service Rifle. Trying i guess to keep the old idea of Civilian Rifle Clubs(DCRA) shooting current Military pattern rifles and being sponsored with DND ammo so you had a population you could draw on in Wartime that was totally famailar with your countries smallarms.
Also growing up in the 60s i had a Sound-o-matic Marx toys M-16, but my first cool toy gun was a Topper toys lieutenants Rifle which copied the M-14, but thats another thread ..................LOL!

AR's aren't the only Black Rifle that AR owners would be all over.
But I/we lurve them because of what they are and what they represent.

Even though it's development has roots in military theater.
It's what we (as civilians) have as the de facto best of breed for a relatively affordable, proven reliable, tactically oriented sport rifle platform that can be optimized for the users specific requirements.

Here in Banada, civilian ARs are toys. If what you are looking for is a shooting toy/sports equipment.... The AR is hard to beat.

If you need a black rifle for some other purpose, And the only other wholy legal option is hunting. Then there are better (read legal) black rifles from a practical and functional standpoint, M14 perhaps.

As a Canadian, I think your decision is pretty simple based on your requirement.
Do you need a do-it-all black rifle? Not an AR
Do you want a toy to play at the range? = AR

Having said that. You are kidding yourself (as ALL CGNers know) if you think you will only be able to afford only one. Where there is a will, there will be a way.

IMVHO, Every restricted firearms owner worth their weight in salt should own an one AR, one Glock or 1911 and one non-restricted .22LR rifle. These are the staples. Everything else is gravy.

Let us know which AR(s) :) you end up getting.

Maliqua, you don't have to by another $500 to $1,000 of odds and ends to play with. A lot of us actually like the plain stock A2 or flat top with the removable sight/carry handle.

You always have the option of the modularity and what you want to add that can help your enjoment or accuracy. Not everyone needs the garage door opener, chain saw or cigarette lighter attachments. They add up in weight and carrying an arquebus fork looks ###.

You do not have much understanding of AR design or in general the design concept of barrel extension employed by AR15. Most of the modern western weapons borr0w AR15's concept of using barrel extension for bolt lockup.

well ive had to replace the upper receiver on a AR a few times after about 4000 rounds because the T handle would not lock into place because the dimple was worn out because it was aluminum, every time a shot a round the T handle would pop back and hit me in the nose lol but this dont really matter in the military when a armorer can swap it in a few min . The aluminum upper is a weak point for very long service life .. i have no bone to pic with the lower, barrel, BCG, ect. there other designs out there that will go through way more rounds without replacing parts because they are all steel, this is a fact ... wow people get ass hurt easy im just stating my opinion and experiences.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57qDTecctQU&hd=1

Yeah, keep the internet myths alive. The US is still running 40+ year old rifles in service.

Arms East lists 20" ARs for $1400. If you want a rifle to match their reliability and accuracy you are going to be paying around double. The support behind the AR family in Canada is also huge, finding replacement or bling parts is easy.

Swiss Arms are good and accurate but double the cost
Tavor " "
Fn2000 " "
CZ858 cheaper but fails on accuracy and ergonomics
XCR fails on acccuracy, reliability and almost double the cost

Of course with ACR and SCAR coming one day we will have two more rifles that are as accurate, as reliable and double (or triple) the cost of AR15s already on the market.

they are a great rifle more accurate and lighter than any semi auto.. all im saying is they do have a shorter service life than all steel designs like a swiss arms but this dont really matter in the military when a armorer can swap a part in a few min..

I've tried about every black rifle out there The AR in the end worked the best because I could set it up exactly as I wanted it. The second best, for me anyways way a heavily modified CZ 858, it came pretty close but I couldn't get quite the accuracy or speed that I could with an AR

Well I know that more than one black rifle may be in my future, but i this will be the first one. and the hardest choice. I think after all this discussion i've settled on a non AR, likely a Kel-tec RFB, and down the road when i'm sick of playing outside i'll grab an AR to show off at the range when i'm sighting in my other guns that i can actually use :p

Respectfully;

For the price of an RFB.

you can get an Norinco AR, and M14 (for your .308 needs) and a Glock. AND some ammo or a range membership.

Remember 1000 rounds of .308 win is ~ $650 as opposed to ~ $440 for .223

Getting the RFB, while an envious choice wouldn't be my first black rifle choice. - just from a "bang" for the buck perspective (excuse the pun)

i have an m14 already (m1a actually that my dad gave me i assumed it was a norc cuz the stock was god awful, but its a springfield \o/ ) i wont buy a glock, i'm not very into pistols at all, glock least of all ( i have a browning bdm that i only bought because it was under $300 : and cheaper than a GSG 1911) the RFB does the one thing i enjoy most shooting. it goes outside with me to the farm. I'd rather buy one gun i'm happy with than 3 guns i dont really want.

that being said i do want an AR15, just not nearly as much :)

Why an AR ???? because your #### will fall off if you don't have one ! (had to be said)

One will never be enough.... so buy 2!

You'll need one that is setup for service rifle 20" etc, then you want a 14" carbine or midlength, then you will need a 10" Shorty

More than 2 :)

One setup as a service rifle, a carbine/midlength, a 10"-12" shorty, maybe a 9mm shorty with its own lower.

But the beauty of the AR platform is that most the above options (except the 9mm) can be achieved by swapping out upper receivers with a common lower due to it being a modular platform.
