Hey,
I want to put together an AR from parts. I am no gunsmith, and I am a beginner. I was wondering if there was any info on how to do this, where to start, what to spend more money on what to spend less on...you guys know what I am talking about

let me know please.

All you need to know.
I had no idea about how to build an AR, and got all my info from:

www.ar15.com

I bought the majority of my parts from Wolverine Supplies and some members here. I've also heard nothing but good things about ArmsEast, and plan on contacting Walter about my next build fairly soon (Wife permitting.)

An AR is a big mechano set have fun.. Get a decent barrel and trigger.. Pretty much all big names should fit togeher (RRA,DPMS,LMT,STAG,ARmalite I'm sure I missed a couple) be careful with colt as they do make large and small pinned uppers/lowers the large pin are not standard...

Have fun and beware once you start you may have trouble stopping...

Buy name brand stuff.
For Uppers, Lowers and LPK's
its hard to beat Stag or CMT, and Armalite is good too - very few others have parts kits in Canada.

Bolt/Bolt Carriers -- get one that is MP'd
Colt, LMT, Stag (IIRC Armalite too)

Barrel - if your upper has M4 feed ramps ensure you get a M4 ramped barrel (well barrel entension - but its not coming off the bbl anyway so)

If you want 1:7 Chrome Lined - Colt, LMT
1:9 Chrome Armalite

Armalite also has SS barrels

Wilson Chrome barrels are economical -- their SS barrels are good (but not exceptional)

DO NOY BUY NO NAME PARTS - there is no guarantee how it was made and that it was done by a reputable manufacturer.

I already have a complete Stag Arms rifle but I ####ed up when I bought accessories. I wanted all of the goodies right off so I settled for cheap parts and now that I know more about it all I realize I should have just bought a good optic and waited until I could figure out what quad rail handguard to buy.

I bought the Fobus one and it looks like crap. It is ####ing plastic too. Anyone know which rail system to put onto the next AR? I want to mount an Eotech (the AA version) and I want irons as well. I am going to side mount a cheap surefire flashlight (I have one on my Stag 15 16" and it is the only budget item I like), and a vertical foregrip (probably one of the ones from Questar). I have the Fobus foregrip right now and it looks weird/ is starting to bug me (anyone wanna buy it??).

My current optic is a 1x32 Bushnell Trophy (looks kinda like an ACOG). It is pretty heavy but for $200 it was cheaper than the Eotech. I have no irons on my gun right now but in the next one I put together I want to get everything right.

Maybe I will keep this forum open for the next six months while I try and complete this from idea to boomstick. I have almost paid off my HK USP .45 now so I am thinking about the next one.

I wish I could scratch these itches with SKS purchases, or with .22 stuff, for a new guy I am really addicted man. But hey at 22 years with no kids and making decent coin I need a way to tie up my cash other than debauchery. Debauching myself is fun but in my experience much more expensive than an addiction to shooting (if you count the days you sleep through work...)!!:dancingbanana: :runaway: ;)

BTW if anyone has a good 24/7 handgun club in Toronto let me know, I am sick of driving to my AR15 club to shoot (cant shoot AR's anywhere in TO:mad: )

As far as free float handguards go, there are only two that I will ever use Daniel Defence and LaRue. I have two DD 9.5FSP and I love them. I'm actually thinking about ordering a third one. :)

For great stuff, you can also talk to Joe at CQB Services (he's a dealer here in CGN). I've just put a Troy quad rail (carbine lenght) on my LMT 14.5". It looks nice and rock solid.
