AR180 or AR15

I played with my first AR180 the other day. I also played with an AR15 Colt with a match barrel.
I wanted the AR 180 until I played with the Colt. The Colt was REALLY nice. Really well built. It seemed like good value for the money. The AR180 has good qualitys also. Number 1 being non-res. Is the AR180 worth the money ? Or should I spend more on the Colt ? Both were new, the 180 was $ 1000.00 and the Colt was $ 1699.00 with a Stainless 20" match barrel.
Im thinking I shouldnt have played with the Colt.
Now this was in a store and I havent shot either one. What is the max range of the 180 ? Does it need to be tuned to shoot 300 yards ?
 
I have both and it depends what you are looking for. The 180B is really quite accurate with handloads and it is dog reliable and easier to clean and keep clean but it is not up to par with a real AR. If you want a good reliable little shooter you can take anywhere get the 180B. If you want a great range only gun get the AR.

^ and there you have it. For me Non-restricted is important so I am looking for a 180-B. I had to sell my PE-90 to fund another project.

I have to be honest, the RRA mag situation really made the sale ALOT easier for me.
 
Yeah... the 10rnd AR mags is what made me jump back into the AR180B. I love it. A non-restricted 10rnd .223. what's not to like.

The AR15 is much more refined/precise and feels more solid, but the piston upper on the AR180B is just awesome and the cost is just right; when you blast through hundreds of rounds and it looks as dirty as a couple 5rnd mags through an AR15 you'll really, really appreciate it.

The AR180B might take a little TLC when you get it depending on your luck (see my thread about 2 of my 5 mags feeding improperly - http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161102&page=4 )

But I'm am really very happy with the AR180B-2 - I love it actually. I was nailing the 200m GONG all day 9 times out of 10 each magazine (sitting of course) :) 6/10 standing (got to work on that) with retail Federal 55gr ammo.
 
If I sold mine (tricked) now I bet I'd get $1700.

I love the AR15 I built but it is a range gun only. The 180B-2 is a little longer, smokes just like the other, and I can take it hunting:D (Also, I hang just as much crap off it:p )

I gotta get rid of the fore grip. Looks like a turd hangin down. As ugly as it is, it shoots like a dream. but here is the one that I take out to the bush.

The good:
- Arguably the best and most copied gas system out there.
- Non-restricted.
- Relatively cheap.

The bad:
- Crappy polymer lower.
- Cheap, stamped metal upper receiver.
- Not an AR-15. :D

Best part is, not an AR15:p :p :p :p :D :D Take a black one on a hunt and get arrested or skin a bunny:p
 
Actually, I prefer the AR myself (not really:p ). But the powers that be dictate that I use a look a like for hunting and the other one for punching holes in paper targets. :confused:

Thats the reason Im holding back on the 180. Its sheet metal and plastic. The Polymer is a proven material but it still gives me the made in China feeling.
 
well, if it helps... the polymer lower has thick steel embedded into it on both sides (for the pins, etc.) ala Glock-Rails.

You guys realise the AKM is sheet metal, right? In fact, a hell of a lot of firearms out there are sheet metal.

You kids need to learn a thing or two about metal strength and stresses. The sheet metal of the AR180B upper is, in fact, a non stress-bearing part of the firearm. All it's really there for is to hold the upper closed and put sights on.

That would be wrong. The BODY is sheet metal on both. These would be low stress areas of the structure. The jet and the car would have a frame that is made from a thicker guage metal. These things called "frames" are actually what is taking the stress of the loads.:p
 
It's funny how people criticize the AR180B for its use of plastic but when HK (SL8), IWI (Tavor) or FN (F2000, P90) makes a plastic rifle it is great, must be something about paying three times as much for the rifle that makes them better. :rolleyes: :p
