I've noticed in a ton of photos of AR180B's that the bolt knob has been replaced with an S-shaped crank. As far as I can tell there's a thinner, longer one, from a Vulcan V18 I think, and a shorter, fatter one, from an original AR180 I believe.

Are these common all over the place? Where do people get them? Would they take anything more than n00b gunsmithing to put in instead of that dull-looking knob?

I may be wrong, but dosen't the original AR180's bolt carrier have a different shaped hole for the bolt handle? Kinda key-hole shaped? And isn't this so the "S" bolt handle won't shift around?

I may be missing out, but I haven't seen any AR180B's with the old style bolt handle as of yet.

Here you go, I have done a number of handle conversions for customers. Really simple and looks and works better.
This style is the original crank used on the Cost Mesa, Howa and Sterling but on an AR-180B

Aha! Thanks for the info, that's what I was looking for!

As for why, same reason some people paint stocks or fill in the fire-select lettering, it's all about LCF. I like the look of the curved handle as opposed to the knob. Makes the rifle appear just a little more like it's prohib progenitor.

:D

I like the factory one, because you can loop around it with your index finger while still holding the pistol grip. It's a slick, "wick" way I discovered, to chamber that first round without having to use your other arm.

what is wrong with what came with the gun? It works for me

Nothing.

The reason for the crank type is to make it easier to #### the handle from the with the other arm, reaching over the gun.

I'll probably get around to making a new one.

I'm more interested in the dust covers I've seen on some.

I am getting ready to install an original dust cover on mine soon. I think I am going to have to buy another 180b just to leave plain jane.
