Arca Rail vs Picatinny PRS/CRPS

Hello All,

I am just starting out to get out to more matches on CRPS and have wanted to get into PRS for a while.

I have a Cadex Strike Nuke EVO for my CRPS and a KRG Whiskey 3 for my PRS build and was wondering if I would be better served with the Arca Rail system or just a long Picatinny rail.

I was planning on getting the 9" Cadex rail for the strike nuke but saw they had the Arca as well and have seen a few of them out at CRPS matches.

Are they worth the extra to get the Arca? If so what attachments would you recommend.

Currently I have an Atlas bipod, but I have seen some guys with attachments for their Armageddon gear bags.

Any help is appreciated.

If you have a long piece of pic rail on your forend, put that on a table ... what will happen.

Then imagine a 2" wide FLAT bottom surface to rest on the same table.

Easy choice.

^ This. The flat bottom of an "arca" or RRS dovetail sits and slides much better on a barricade bag like a Game Changer. For your Atlas bipod, get an RRS throw lever adapter. That will let you slide your bipod up and down the length of the rail as needed. It will also allow you to clip into any suitable tripod ballhead.

The various "gamer plates" (like the Area 419 Railchanger X, Gray Ops ones, etc) come in handy to attach your front support bag (read Gamechanger) to your rifle but are honestly pretty niche and not something I'd really suggest investing in early on in your "PRS-journey". You'll almost certainly get the opportunity to play with one at a match and determine for yourself if it's something you want. For what it's worth, I have a Railchanger X and only in very specific situations do I attach my Gamechanger to my rifle, in most cases, I don't use the plate at all, just a bag.

Now the ultimate question of which Arca rail to get for the KRG Whiskey 3 and for the Cadex Strike Nuke Evo.

Whatever you prefer... ARCA means the dimensions are set if widgets are built to spec.

So it makes no functional difference.... ps, If you load any ARCA widget enough for it to move, that is waaaaaayyyyyy more force then needed.

So far I have seen some stuff from KRG and area 419 as well as an elite from Cadex, but not sure that is what I am looking for.

Keep in mind that prior to RRS establishing and publishing a standard, there was no standard for ARCA.

Without getting rails and components that aren't the RRS standard, it's very possible to get ARCA components that don't cooperate with each other.

ARCA Swiss has been used in the camera world for several decades.

New to the shooting world... not to the rest of the world.

Jerry

I'm fully aware of that.

There is no standard of ARCA in the camera world. Each camera company has developed their own internal specs for ARCA. You can buy ARCA components from two different camera companies, and they may or may not be compatible.

My wife would definitely yell at me if I put a Picatinny-railed front stock on the table, yes.

(I put Arca rails on my rifles after your advice several months back; thanks.)

So which ones are standard RRS? And which clamps would you guys recommend?

If you look at various manfs of clamps at all price points, you will see that they are all adjustable over a sizeable range. Almost all have a side plate that moves in and out with either a knob or QD type lever

I have yet to see a clamp that wasn't adjustable to account for variations in rails.

Really basic stuff... and elegant in its simplicity. I would suggest to have a closer look at some rails and widgets..... alot of stuff works with alot of other stuff... insert branding, price and bling you prefer and enjoy.

MDT’s rails are also done to the RRS spec, like KThomas, I also use RRS levers, they’re a great piece of kit. He’s also correct that there isn’t a spec for “arca” rails, the dimensions can be all over the place. It’s not a big deal if all the adapters you use are of the “screw knob” type (as you can just crank them down gorilla-tight) but levers may or may not work. It’ll just save you some headache getting a rail from a firearm accessory manufacturer that’s made to RRS’ spec vs getting a chicom special from Amazon...

Currently leaning towards the area 419 Arcalock. Now gotta figure out which lengths would be best and if I need to get the barricade stops

Some QD in spec mounts will not clamp solid without adjustment on Amazon camera “ Chinese “ arca. But if it’s a screw type you are gtg

Another thing to keep in mind with these rails is that a lot of the ARCA rails extend beyond the forend of the stock/chassis. What people are finding when they mount their bipods on the end of an ARCA rail that is not supported by the stock, is an increase in vertical due to flexing of the rail under recoil.

So don't be too eager to run your bipod out past your stock/chassis.

This right here. Been around for a long time but no standard. Unless it's compatible with RRS' dovetail standard it may or not fit.
