Archery - How far do you shoot?

40-45 yards is the max for me shooting an exomax crossbow. damn thing is so accurate its oring to shoot because i already know ill hit what im aiming at. fps is around 350fps i believe so it shoots really flat.

i practise at 70 to 80 yards normally because at normal hunting ranges its boring to shoot. at those shorter ranges i already know ill hit what im aiming at. 25 yards = 1 hole groups;) my theory is if i practise at long range, then ill be great at normal hunting ranges. so far its been working great. refer to my avatar pic...cottontail shot at 35-40 yards standing, offhand, i was aiming for its eye and missed by about a 1/2";)

shooting small game with your bow is the best because range estimation and shot placement are crucial for a clean kill;) its just too bad my exomax is too powerful for the little critters. even with a judo point and zwickey scorpio i still get completee pass throughs at 40 yards and have to search for my bolts...

hey ch312, do you find alot of wear on the exomax string, like really quick? that exomax is the cats a$$, would like to add one to the arsenal. Had excalibur x-bows before and they are really great over the wheeled x-bows

ive shot mine about 200 times so far and there isnt any wear on the serving at all yet. i always ensure that there is plenty of wax on the serving as well. definatly a great crossbow and im glad i bought it. plus with excaliburs they really hold their value as used ones commonly sell for not much less than buying one new

I would try to get a release just for hunting, it will really tighten your groups, its like a timmney for your bow, I shoot with or without and both have merrits, but tight groups mean longer range shots will be easier to stay in the kill zone. Try the old concho style releases they are very natural in drawing motions.

I'm staying away from releases for a couple reasons, technical and nostalgia, for lack of a better term. I think there's enough "technology" in the bow I'm using already. Yes, I know there's the whole accuracy/wounding game thing, but that's why I intend on getting real good with fingers. If I had to judge, I'd say I'm doing well right now at the 30 mark. IF, I'm off on a shot, it's because my technique/release has differed from the norm. So i just have to keep consistent. I'm starting to shoot for at least a half hour every day now, so it should be well together by deer season...and hopefully by turkey season!

I'm going to practice up to 50-60 yards, but will keep game shots under 30 (big game).
The owner at the archery shot near my place said he doesn't shoot deer over 15yards. Not to mention, he's got an eaaaasy 50 trophies hanging in his shop...all his own....all with a bow. Going in there the first time was a very humbling experience!

I just picked up a 1yr old PSE, I went full rig including mech release. I haven't held a bow in my hand for 13 years and I was putting 6 arrows into an area the size of my fist at 20m. I think I'll eventually practice out to 60m but hunt within 40m. It's nice to have a flat, fast bow. My question is should I run a bow quiver or hip quiver?

30 yards on deer. I might try a longer shot if I have my rangefinder and trust my pins. The conditions would have to be pretty ideal though.
