Archery Practice

I read through the town bylaws. There is nothing in there that specifically deals with this. So I think I'm good there.

Second is I've got neighbours on each side of me that I'm friends with. They both have young kids; too small to be able to open the gates into my yard once I latch them. So I think I'm good there.

Third, I set up my butt in a spot, where it's impossible for anybody to walk into my line of fire, without seeing me or me seeing them. I have a measured 25 yards there to shoot. I could set up for longer shots, but then they'd be alongside the house, where the risk would be that people could inadvertently enter the shooting line. I'm shooting at my storage shed, which acts as a backstop if an arrow was off target. So I think I'm good to go.

Sounds like your good to go. You will find you shoot a lot more and when you can just walk out the back door.

Checking local municipal bylaws is definately a good starting point,, says me who has yet to do so and I live almost down town. A few years back when I started in archery, I joined the local club but that's roughly 3/4 of an hours drive. So, I made up a big heavy duty target bag, stuffed/crammed full with plastic wrap that I suspended from a floor joist in my basement. With the double basement garage doors open and shooting from my driveway I can get up to a 25m distance. Starting just before I retired, when I came home, for about a half hour before supper, I'd do a little bow shooting. After retirement and up until this year, I'd get in about a half hour of pracrice about every second day. Again admittedly:redface:, I haven't checked the local bylaws but on two separate occasions patrol cars driving by have slowed down, watched for a minute or so and then continued on. Haven't been doing much archery lately as the focus is back on handguns and rifles, at the moment;).

You have to look at where your issues can come from...Municipal bylaws - sounds like you're good. Criminial Code - nothing specific about bows as they are not firearms. With that being said you could have issues obviously if physicla harm or property damage occur - there are sections of the code for that. In the interests of a healthy neighbourhood, talk to you neigbours and you can potentially deal with issues before they arise. The long and short is it is a relationship issue more than a legal issue. I will leave my soapbox now.

Just a shed behin doesn't mean your safe. An arrow from a compound bow can fly 400+ meters if shot upwards....if your release fails....you have a string/cable break...etc...you have the chance of launching an arrow across town....the only safe place to shoot would be I there was nothing within a 1/4 mile behind your butt.
Even if it isn't against the law to shoot where you do, if you were to have an accident and someone was hurt, it could cost you millions if you are held liable/negligent....it is not worth the risk.

I do it all the time. Neighbors even see me. But then again I clear their drive ways in the winter and trim their grass the odd time in the summer. It's all about relationships!
Same here. 100% what you said.
The key also is offering them all a try so they can see how it works and how safe they are with you shooting.

what ever happen to the King's Decree encouraging His subjects to practice archery on Sundays?????

whish I had a back yard, im forced to go to a park and set up there, its really hard to find a proper place, with back stop, limited access for people to wonder in and close by
