I seriously considered that conversion a few years back, but an older friend with MUCH experience advised me that it was very hard to get a 788 mag to feed the 358.

How did you find it?

How did I find what?

The new rig was built by Ron Smith (well renowned). I haven't got the rifle back home yet, but to get the .358 to feed in the mag is simple. Just compress the factory indentations on the mag to accomadate the .358 casing. All is needed is to press them out .025 on each side of the mag.

Nothing that to stout pieces of steel and a 10 ton press can't fix.:)

It will be interesting to see how reliably the 358 feeds.

I know Ron and have seen and owned some of his work, especially his rebore jobs. If anyone can make it work, he can, but there have been a number of them that tried and couldn't, including Frank DeHaas.

Hope it works slick for you.

Ted

So what your telling me is all I have to do is find a cheap left hand 788 in 308, and send it to ron, and I've got my left hand short action 358?
I've got access to a 200 ton press, so Im good:D :D :D :D :D
Arch, my wallet hates you, I think I just found my new project. :D :D :D

Well, don't get to exited, I haven't got it yet to see how it works. I will have an update on it's performance in its own separate forum.

The 7mm-08 Carbine went to one of my friends.

pretty nice arch.. Is that model 36 parkerised or somethin ?

Hi, yes I did have it redone in matte finish. When I bought it it was in rough shape. Still needs firing pin work to be complete.

I wanted gloss finish, but matte was the only way I could keep the original stamps legibale.

I am going to start having "Marlin Days" at the range very soon. we'll see who's a keeper and who may go up for sale. You just never know ;)

It will take some bravery to pull the trigger on the 219 Zipper. made in 1964 by the serial code and has never been fired. I may just put it away for about 20 years. Wonder what it would be worth then?
