Arctic Warfare project

My new barrel set-up is working really well. I shot my smallest ever 100m 5-shot group yesterday, with any firearm. So I'm happy about that. I think the new barrel actually shoots about the same as the 20" barrel, but the difference is more in a few changes in technique I've been trying. I've just come to accept that... if you can't keep the reticle completely still, you can't hit the same spot. The rifle won't do it for you no matter how nice it is. A simplistic truism, yes... but I think everyone has to go through these thought processes to improve their shooting. I am still a novice, but you have to start somewhere.

My best is the one on the right. 5 shots into 7/16" of an inch at 100m/109yards. I've gotten 1/2" at 100m many times, but never any less than that with 5 shots. It's a very freakish looking group, as it looks like I shot 2 rounds and claimed 5. But I assure you 5 rounds of factory ammo went through that 7/16th of an inch, or about 11.1mm centre-to-centre.

The group in the left would be very similar, or better, except that I didn't catch a break on that one shot that is low-right. Still comes in just over half an inch.

I don't want to put up tons of groups, because it is sort of self-indulgent, but I have reams of groups that are right around 1/2" at 100m (plus or minus a shade) and right around 1 inch (plus or minus) at 200m. The rifle is extremely consistent. As my shooting technique gets a bit better, I think I can drop that down to be consistently under 1/2" at 100m and under 1" at 200m. Beyond that, I think it hits a wall and you need a true target rifle to do any better.

Where can one buy an AI AW? Wolverine Supplies used to have them showing on their website, but it is only the 50BMG now.

The only place in Canada you can buy an AI rifle from at all (other than a used one) is Wolverine Supplies. Most of what is for sale doesn't show on their website. You need to order it and pay a deposit, then wait for... maybe 6 months. There is never really any stock of most things, like rifles in .308. They sell right away. There was one AX308 that came in the September AI shipment. It was on the website for about a week. There were two AE308 rifles in the Spring time. Both were only on the website for a few days each.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen! Off the sell the first born now lol I saw the AWP on the E/E, but the unknown round count bothers me...still a good price for all the goodies it comes with that a guy doesn't have to hunt for himself. Great thread! Sorry for the thread jack.

Cool! gotta go check that out. Cabela's is maybe a mile from home. They had something else once that had all the goodies attached but the price was "rifle only".
Sorry, off topic. I remember that AI coming back in September and disappearing before I could pull the trigger.

Some photos of the "new" (2013 onward) AI stocksides. This is an AW in .300WinMag. I will admit, when I first saw these, I found them utterly nauseating and very "Buck Rogers", but now they seem to be growing on me... at least to some extent. What do you guys think?

I think this would look better as a buttspike model, but it still look pretty good.

I will sell you those exact green stocksides if you want them, with butt spike cutout haha;)

I actually have a set :) Remember when you and I were having that conversation about whether you could still get the old type of stocksides, and I said that I ordered a set of stocksides from Wolverine and they weren't completely sure what they would look like when they came in? Well, you were right. All you can get is the new style. The old ones don't exist anywhere, except maybe in the old stock of a retailer somewhere... like the FDE set you found in Germany. But even that is probably all gone now.

I was thinking about sending my set back, but I'll probably just keep it. I should take it out of the plastic and show some photos some day. The new style are all the same "kit" for every model AW/AE/AICS, long or short action, any calibre, butt-spike or not, and - I think - folding stock or not. I believe that is the reason they changed. One modular set of stocksides for everyone. No more... "I need a green, long-action, AW, folder, with buttspike set". Even the bolt handle notch cutout is common among AICS and the other models now.

I think the main thing they wanted to change was to come out with their own copy of the Viper-skins with just the pistol grip. That I cannot accept. Those pistol grip stocks. If I wanted pistol grip... I buy something else other than AI.

The 2000's era stocksides are a classic. I'm starting to really think it was a good deal to buy the rifle I did when I did, as you cannot get one exactly like that now. I just need the double forerail to complete it... and it is on its way from England.

Well I think that was one time where I would have liked to be wrong then. I too like the old ones, they just fit better. I ordered the sunshade for my S&B and have a us optics rifle level on the way as well. All I need now is for the AI handstop with sling loop to arrive so I can attach/detach my 1907 and then mine too will be done.

Pfft my moisin nagant will outshoot that all day, and I can buy a crate of mosins for the price of.... help ghostie has set his dog on me.

Ha! No. I'm not so sure about me getting out to Calgary, but if you are in Vancouver you are certainly welcome to look me up and put some rounds through my AW.

In terms of Roger's WA2000 (and his long list of unobtainium guns shown in his Youtube channel)... you'll have to ask him! I've known him for like 7-8 years, there's actually three of them... "The Three Taiwanese Horsemen of the Unobtainium Apocalypse" + throw in ARMTAC Chris for good measure, and I've only tried a small fraction of what they have. It takes time to get to know people... and my wife is from Taiwan, so I've got an "in" to get to know them. :)

There is a stunningly awesome NIB "real" G22 sniper rifle on gunbroker right now. Not an AWM in .300WinMag configured to look like a Bundeswehr G22, but one of a group of 10 that went to the U.S. which are the same as what was shipped to the Germany Army, marked G22, 1998, Hensoldt SSG scope (without the "P" for paralax in those days, different from the ones Tactical Imports can get now). What a piece of history! Starting bid $27,500. WOWZERS! If it were half that or less, my brain would be going into overdrive thinking about ways I could make it mine, but at that price... ain't gonnna happen. Probabably belongs in a museum anyway.

Text from the add:
Accuracy International G22.

German Armed Forces
Since 1998 the Bundeswehr fields an AWM-F chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum (7.62 × 67 mm in Bundeswehr nomenclature), with a 3–12×56 SSG telescopic sight made by the German company Zeiss, under the designation of G22 (for Gewehr 22) or Scharfschützengewehr 22 (sniper rifle 22). The German G22 rifles have folding stocks and emergency iron sights. For their G22 rifles the Bundeswehr claims an effective range of 1,100 m (1,203 yd).[13][14] The German ammunition manufacturer Metallwerk Elisenhütte Nassau (MEN) has specially developed 7.62 × 67 mm ammunition for the G22.[26] The Carl Zeiss Optronics (previously branded as Hensoldt) telescopic sight has a mil-dot reticle and a scale that enables the operator to see the dialled in elevation setting through the rifle scopes ocular.

This is an original authentic G22 weapon system with full kit and all gear/accessories as issued to the German Military snipers. This rifle and it's full kit are all absolutely NEW and unfired. I am the original owner and this kit has been stored just as you see it in my climate controlled vault since purchase in 98 and has not been displayed or handled.

This kit is one of fewer than 10 that were imported into the U.S. as a one time opportunity by the original AI U.S. importer. I have only ever seen one of these authentic G22 kits for sale in the past ten years and it was listed for $40k, it disappeared quickly and I have no idea what the actual sale price brought. Again, this is an authentic original G22 weapon system kit as issued to the German Military snipers...this is the real deal...not a pieced together kit.

This rifle had all the latest upgrades such as quick-adjust butt, quick-adjust cheek, pic rail, quick-adjust spike before any of those upgrades were available as options on the commercially available AW and AWM rifles. There are a number of specific differences on the G22 vs the similar AWM rifle, such as the pic rail is placed to accommodate the rear sight in such a way that it can be fitted under the optic and left in place zeroed and ready to be used with the quick detach lever release on the special Hensoldt optic. (the way the pic rail is placed all the way to the rear on standard AW rifles and is too high to place the rear iron sight under the optic and leave it in place at the ready with the optic installed...even a taller optic like the quick detach Hensoldt SSG or SSG-P). The Hensoldt SSG is also spec'd specific to this G22 kit and has an elevation dial calibrated for this weapon in .300 WM as well as the neutral elevation markings. The muzzle break is a special tactical muzzle break that is different than the tactical muzzle break that was available in the AW series...although they both allow for the attachment of a suppressor without removal of the break or the iron sights.

The Hensoldt optic is unique in a number of ways with it's quick detach return-to-zero mounting system built into the body of the optic eliminating the need for a separate mounting system. Also, the elevation currently dialed is visible to the user within the optic and no need to disengage to look at the elevation turret...the optic has an arrow and elevation MILs are numbered inside the optic that is visible all the time and lit with the illumination and also shows the adjustments as you dial it. Optic is the Hensoldt ZF 3-12x56 SSG with special elevation turret for the G22 .300WM that isn't standard to the SSG or SSG-P.

This is the full G22 kit as issued and includes everything shown in the photos just as you see and includes a spec sheet for the kit (in German)...the kit is labeled correctly as issued and comes complete just exactly as issued to the German Military snipers.

This is a very elite military collectible piece that is extraordinarily rare in private hands in the USA and one of fewer than 10 such original G22 kits imported into the US. This kit is difficult to compare for price as there just aren't any comp sales to find info. The only other kit I'm aware of selling was priced at $40,000 when I saw it several years ago. This rifle and entire kit is NEW unfired unused and never displayed or handled.

This is a No Reserve auction and the starting price is well below what I was advised this kit is worth as a collector piece.
