are .22s fun/worth getting

I'm also new to the hobby.

My first is a bolt-action Cooey Model 60 .22 which is in remarkably good shape. Walnut stock, steel trigger guard, pre-drilled and tapped for a weaver scope mount. It even still has the adjusting piece under the rear sights. Got it on EE, picked up locally. The seller is an old CGNer and a real gent. I had no clue what a nice gun I was buying till I got about half-way through the Cooey Make-over thread.

So far, rifle, rifle case, trigger lock, cleaning kit, and 3 boxes of ammo and I'm still under $300. Another $100 and I'll have a 4x32 scope to play with, and even more learning to do.

I don't have any paintball gear. But I do have a short bus.

I keep looking at other guns and want to buy them. I'm going to put a few hundred if not a few thousand rounds through the Cooey, get it working as well as it can work and get myself edumacated more and shooting as well as I can shoot. If, after that, I still want to save up & blow the money on a serious target rifle and optics, them maybe I will. And if I don't, I've spent next to nothing and still have a rifle the nephews will fight over when I'm dead. Win.

Again as many have said, .22s are cheap and fun. However, I appreciate what one Nutter said above about refining your skills. With quality ammo and patience they can build up your skill set for your other guns while challenging and pushing your comfort zone with the .22 itself. And yes, you will eventually acquire more than one...they're great!!

.22's are great fun whether bolt or semi. I own 4 at the moment, a cooey 39 for my kids, mossberg 715t carry handle verson, mossberg 715t flattop, and a savage .22wmr which is my do all gun.
Cheap to shoot as others have said and great for learning control on. Kids and I love the vast assortment of targets to shoot and the fact you do not need a lot of room. My girls, including wife, like the subsonic ammo. Next weekend the girls get to pick out their own savage rascals.

Gads .22s are soooo much fun . I never go to the range without the 10/22 and the Cooey 60 . What else can you shoot a whole afternoon with for $20 ?

I've got a Ruger SR1911, Glock 17, and a Tokarev TT33. They are all a blast to shoot. But l've also got a GSG 1911 and a Ruger 10/22. They are both fun to shoot and reallly inexpensive for hours of fun. I say get one and enjoy the hours of fun that you'll get from it.

we're limited to 5 rnds maximum for a non-restricted center fire rifle.

but unlimited rounds for a rimfire.
rimfire is very inexpensive to purchase, and learning trigger control & breathing is a lot easier when your rounds cost you pennies..

I have owned dozens of long guns, from .700 to .17 and if i could only keep one.... it would be chambered for .22 long rifle.

It depends where you are - if you are rural or go camping on crown land much, then a .22 will be practical and fun. But if you live in a city and only shoot at shooting ranges then a .22 is less useful. For me a .458 magnum is just an amusing toy, but a .22 is a tool I can use every day.

Everyone has their favourite shooting sports. I like them all, but one of my favs is to try to get as accurate as I can with a .223 bolt action. It's just the right tack driver for me. But I have a couple .22s in my collection for two reasons: firstly, whenever I take a "new shooter" to the range, I always start them off on the .22, and sometimes even on the subsonic rounds. I want them to enjoy the simple thrill of being able to put the hole on the paper, without the recoil, or assault to the ears (if the first time they ever fire a gun is on a .50BMG, odds are they won't come back). The other reason is just because it's fun to "plink" away at a target, clays on the backstop, whatever, as long as I like, knowing I've only gone through a couple dollars in ammo, tops.

I think the best bet for a .22 would be a semi, like the Ruger 10/22, Remington 597, or one of the other brands. Ease of use, lots of fun.

I have a 10-22 takedown, a Henry lever, and a Norinco M93 pistol.

I shoot a lot more rounds through those guns that all the others put together. They are fun, cheap to shoot (relatively), accurate, and unless you are at the range, quiet. What's not to like?
