I know the CFC info sheet says that shotguns made prior to 1898 that are .410, 28 ga, 20, 16, 12, 10 ga are not antiques. Does this apply to only long barrelled shotguns or does it apply to pistols as well?

I came accross a belgian single shot 410 pistol made in the 1880's that looks unfired...bluing is faded but the case colouring is like new. Its in amaizing shape.

Come to think of it i think youre right. I didnt measure the bore but the gun had .410 stamped on the barrel. Its probably past the antique cutoff...way past. I think the guy was mistaken.

...I took a look on the Remington site and they say that in 1867 the first .410 bore shotshell was available in the U.S....

I dont know Sportee i think if the gun can shoot a 410 its 45 colt capable as well.
Tho its clearly what the guns are chambered for Orignaly or Adapted to shoot that counts, like 455 Webleys that shoot 45 ACP. there OK

I think 410 could be thought of as 45 colt as i have seen modern survival Guns that say 410 /45 colt.

Hey i could be wrong here. maby if it was smooth bored you would be OK.
Mind you i never seen a 410 Antique Pistol either.

If the bore truly is .410 then you would be awfully foolish to fire a .45 colt in the gun. You are squeezing a .45 diameter bullet down a .41 diameter hole. If the gun is designed to be shot with one hand, then I believe it is a handgun and not a shotgun and therefore government by the caliber rules for antique handguns rather than for antique shotguns.

So are the survival 410/ 45 colt guns that shoot both Rounds what bore dia do they have i wonder.

Im sure ive seen them advertised.

Theres otheres as well.
Im betting them guns are special designed tho.

LOL Heres one for you Sportee but its Modern! has a 22 Barrel ontop of a 45 colt/410 lower barrel! Id like to have one of these :D

This gun shoots 410 shotgun and 45 colt from the same lower barrel.

This one is marked .410 and has no reference to 45 colt so i imagine it has a .41 bore rather than the .450 of the 45/410's. It is a smoothbore as well.

the question is...does it fall into the shotgun category or the handgun gatecory?

To better describe it: its a single shot .410 smoothbore. I cant remember the make but i seem to recall it being belgian. Its a break action with exposed hammer with a 10" barrel and very nice pistol grip. It kinda looks like one of those H&R Handy Guns. I should have taken some pics of the thing.

I believe the bore of a .410 is .410. A .45 cal smoothbore with a chamber long enough for a .410 shell would safely discharge the shotshells although the pattern would be pretty open. Unless you were shooting roundball loads, the colt slugs would not be very accurate either but both would work after a fashion for the first 20 yards or so.
I suspect that the gun above probably has at least some straight rifling because it appears to be intended for use in the US and I am almost positive that they ban smoothbore pistols (classsed as sawed off shotguns I think). The H&R Handygun is illegal in the US unless registered as being there before the law changed. They were only made for a few years in the 1930's

Well if its a 410 pistol that you can PROVE was made before 1898 then id say its a prescribed antique.
Seems my concern about the 45 colt thing is Null as Doug says the bores diffrent DIA.
If its Belgian then maby it has the Pre 1893 Proofmark on the back of the barrel.
I also heard that smooth bored Pistols revolvers are Ilegal in the USA.
Not sure if being Antique makes a diffrence tho.
