At the range, a fellow at the table next to me fires his norc. Dud after dud three rounds fall on the ground. He looked at them and said that some chineese ammo does not fire at all no matter how many times he tries.

I look at the rounds and the primers are obviously defective or seated too deep, or maybe the cases are defective. End result: the heel of the primer is below the heel of the case.

Without much thinking I wipe them clean and load into my yogo. Pop-pop-pop they go off and hit the target in a nice group.

The yugo did not care that the primers were seated deeper than normal. Norinco did. Are all norcs picky about ammo?

Close to 1000 rounds through my D and not one FTF. I'll bet his pin is too shallow/short. Maybe he could measure it and compare to say your pin.

Never had that problem. Firing Norc yellowbox 5.56 through my remmy 700 I will get typically 4 FTF in a box of 20. Put those in the CQ and not a problem. Goes off everytime without a hitch. My other Norc Semis have NEVER had a FTF or FTE (M305, 1911, CQ311 and SKS)

Ive got a milsurp type 56 from the 70's, in the many thousands of rounds it has seen it hasn't had 1 ftf or fte, the guys gun/firing pic must be a lemon.

Same here, only one dud with many many many rnds through her, and it was a Norinco Silverbox cartridge.
I bet he isn't cleaning his firing pin.

I agree that it is good to clean the firing pin and the firing pin chamber, although it requires the disassembly of the bolt.

I know it doesn't apply in this case, but when you shoot any ammo that has a red sealant around the primer, you will find red gunk on the firing pin and the firing pin chamber. If it isn't cleaned every once in a while it will probably cause problems. Remember, QTips are your friend.

I agree with Calum, either his firing pin is gunked up or it's worn out (maybe both?). Isn't SKS troubleshooting fun? :D

Fun with an SKS, a short skit by poweredbybeer;
ShooterA; "why does my SKS do this?"
*ShooterA's SKS slamfires all 5 rounds, trigger group pops out & action falls on the bench, gas tube, op-rod & spring goes flying 20 feet into the bush and reciever cover flies off and hits ShooterA right in the forehead*
ShooterB; "whoa!" :runaway:
ShooterA; "happens every time, I can't figure it out!"
ShooterB; "do you clean it?"
ShooterA; "umm, no?"
ShooterB; "you've never cleaned it, have you?"
ShooterA; "I dropped it in a creek once"
ShooterB; "gimme that!" *takes SKS away from ShooterA*

:D

Is it a milled and threaded Nork, or a late commercial version? The former is aces, the latter, well, they don't cost too much ;)

If it's one of those Lever arms pinned barrel to a threaded receiver abortions, the light primer strkes are likely due to the barrel sliding forward increasing headspace. Don't sit beside him next time you see him at the range......

Never had a proper military chinese rifle go bad on me, the commercial ones, however... let's just say Lever Arms ain't what it used to be since Alan stopped running the place...

Must be a special forces Magnum model. :D

Whats so funny? That is what I use. Ive got no use for "Magnums" and fancy calibers. It suits my needs just fine. Its the guys WITH the magnums and fancy calibers that waste half the animal because they cant shoot worth a damn, You should be laughing at. :D

You might want to follow my previous zillion comments on the subject...as I believe the 7.62x39 is on par with the 30/30, so I'm laughing with you not at you. :D
