Are Beretta Handguns Not Popular?

I see a lot of talk on the forums about 1911's, Glocks, SIGs, etc, but not too much about Beretta handguns like 92/96...

I'm just curious as to why that is?

Nothing wrong with Beretta's. Especially the older ones.

I personally REALLY like the design and look of Beretta handguns, so it's surprising that I don't see/hear more about them at the range/on CGN...

Nice piece, btw :D

I`ve got two and they are great, do a search you will find plenty of talk and owners.

I've always wanted a 92-F....most likely from too much TV

but haven't really gotten around to getting one yet...

They're popular with me...I've owned and shot enough other guns and 92 is still my fav. design. Haven't came across a more reliable gun, or a better looking one...

here's my baby...

WRT the 92 series, some find the grip diameter too large, and the double action trigger reach too long. The trigger itself is fine, and the gun tends to go bang every time. Only mechanical headache is the locking block is subject to unannounced failure, locking up the gun in the process.

As far as police sales, Beretta initially sold well. However, a few factors have lead to a large loss in market share. The locking block replacement issue, combined with Beretta's announced withdrawl of support for the model in favour of new lines has pissed off not a few departments.

The second factor is external. Glock beat them wrt product support, and regular gun buy back programs have made for some pretty happy departments. Glock have replaced old guns for new at low cost, updating departments from first and second generation guns to the current model. Glock meanwhile can sell these old guns in markets like Mass. and California where there is a high demand but hurdles in the way of selling new product.

Shot a couple.. wasnt really a fan when compared to a my Glock, M&P and a buddies SP-01.

They do have a huge following though....

My Beretta 92 FS was my first pistol that I purchased.

I've shot revolvers, and other semi auto's, but the 92 FS fit my fat hand perfectly. I can't wait to take it to the range and put some holes in the paper :D

When compared to a 1911, I never favoured the Baretta due to the shifting trigger position (double action) and all of the extra parts etc. that go along with it.

While it is true that the Baretta can be "field stripped" fairly quickly, it is much harder to fully break down when compared to a 1911.

The other problem was that Barettas usually shot calibres that were smaller than what I wanted to shoot.

Also, they were not cheap to buy.

I love 'em just can't afford to own any right now. Instead, I own a 1989 or1990 Taurus PT92 and really enjoy it very much. I did have to replace the locking block, it took forever to get one but once I was hooked up with the right CGN'er I was back to plinking with it!

I agree with what another guy said in here about the 92. I have smaller than average hands and it is just completely uncomfortable to hold or shoot. It isn't even a matter of grip circumferance alone. I can hold a Para 14-45 and it doesn't feel overwhelmingly large, it's the distance I think from the back of the grip out to the trigger.

Price is another reason, a 92 is a couple hundred dollars more than a CZ75, Glock 17, XD, M&P etc. and it isn't really superior in any way quality wise.

IMO it is...92 has nicer fit and finish. Not that those other guns are cheap, but there are noticable built quality differences.

phatns2pid...have you ever field striped a 92? It's ridiculously easy! Glock is complicated in comparison ;) I've never completelly detailed striped it since there was no need, but I did take the extractor out, replaced the hammer and trigger as well as the mainspring...all pretty easy actually!
