Are Harris bipods the be-all and end-all of swivel mounted folding bipods?

As the title states ... Are the Harris S series of bipods 160$ because they are 160$ worth of good bipod or are other knock-off brands such as Caldwell or Rockpoint just as good these days?

My rock Point is 2 yrs old been under my 223, 308 , 338wm and 338lapua and is still going strong .

It's got nothing on my atlas but for the price I paid it could break tomorrow and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. I've never seen a RP that's swivel and notched legs tho which would be nice

I had a Harris sbr 6-9 swivel with leg notches and it was great. No issues and it can take a hell of a beating. It is the real deal an used by various military's.

I have two of them and they are great. One of them has all the mods you can do to a Harris, podloc, QD feet, leg swivel locks. Very simple, very rugged and priced well.
Sure there are better ones out there ie Atlas, but for the price, they can't be beat IMHO.

I have seen other Bipods that were very nice ... However the weight of them were a concern for me. I like the Harris because they are durable and light weight , Have bin for me anyway... " End all Be all ? " probably not. But definatly up there. for me they have all the options with light weight and durability. never a complaint form me. Great product !

Harris sucks compared to Atlas. ( but that's comparing a Ferrari to a Hyundai ) . I own both and I run the Harris S model with POD-LOC on my cheaper guns. IMHO the non S models from Harris are even more useless. Check out the picture, Harris has those awful springs and are way more bulky then the Atlas. But on the flip side, Its hard to justify spending 350$ for a bipod on a 400$ gun...

And The Harris SBR's are 100$ when you buy them from the US... 160$ is a rip off.... I actually get mine from Brownells + 5.75 ship.

Harris S bipods shouldn't cost that much in Canada. Or I am charging way too little :)

the Harris is a solid baseline for products of its type. They are in no way the gold standard of adjustable bipods.

If you want to be able to shoot with bench rest type accuracy, have a look at the many FTR bipods - there is a post in here somewhere reviewing several of them

The harris is a great field expediant rest. Better then a rolled up sleeping bag for sure. Some can shoot them very well. Most CAN'T.

Take any rifle and any shooter, their accuracy, precision will sky rocket on a modern FTR bipod vs a Harris.

Otherwise, we would just use them in competition and save ourselves alot of money.

I have a basic Harris knock-off on my MKII and an MPOD on my FTR setup. I'm looking for something more portable for coyotes, the swivel would be nice too if setting up on uneven logs or what-have-you. The other option is shooting sticks but I've never used them and the idea of juggling the sticks while trying to get a clean shot off isn't exactly KISS.

Jerry, I'll check you prices now that you've mentioned it.

Tikka223, for the type of field shooting you are suggesting, I would go with a bag filled with poly beads. WAY easier to get set up on whatever the ground has to offer.

Harris bipods are SLOW to set up unless you just happen to luck out on the leg height adjustment. AND they can be very fussy about where you can rest the feet. Edge of a log, smooth rocks, sand, grass - those rubber feet may not agree. Now you are fussing around getting set up which makes you a huge target to the incoming pooches.

In fact, the best thing to do - learn how to shoot with a sling with a hand supported rest. Forget about the bipod altogether.

If I am set up looking over whatever and waiting, sure, it can all work out. But for a fast set up, sling it, grip it, breath and shoot

I own five bipods, three Harris, one Atlas and one GG & G.

The Harris units are decent for the price and function well.

The Atlas is a beautiful piece of design/construction, although it is almost 3X the cost of the Harris units, it is lighter, stronger and a "cleaner" design as there are no external springs/mounts.

The GG & G bipod is priced between the Harris and Atlas bipods. It is very light, has nice adjustment features and is well designed/constructed.

If I was looking for another bipod the Atlas would be at the top of my list if I could gather the $$$! The GG & G would be second on my list. I purchased my Harris bipods before I got my hands on the Atlas and GG&G, and as I already have three Harris units, I doubt I will buy any more.

I have both Harris and a couple UTG the harris is a little more solid to the feel
heavier springs etc but frankly the UTG's havent let me down eiether yet
and i can get 5 utgs to 1 harris ,wonder why i only have one Harris ,wait no i dont

Great thread , very informative. Bipods are not something i actually dont know too much about. Id like to check out these Atlas bipods

Another cool unit to look at is the CF-SS/bipod made by Fred Harvey of Star Shooter. Just got into shooting F class last year and met him at a match, if you are not all about the tactical look check it out.

I have demoed an older atlas and I really like them. Very well built. Probably not worth it if you are only putting a $350 bipod on a $500 gun, but on the flipside, you are crazy to put a $75 bipod on a multi thousand dollar gun. I wouldn't cheap out on optics on a gun like that, so why would I cheap on on the bipod that keeps it stable?
