Are Hunters really all that smart?

I don't mind spending money on good stuff- high end optics, good rifles, premium bullets, good clothing, boots, sleeping bag, tents and knives.

Got a few gadgets but you can really confuse yourself wiht all the stuff out there.

I've been resisiting camo for years, but it's starting to creep into my wardrobe alot more...Hard to find good stuff that isn't camo or bright colours (from MEC etc) these days..

My pet peeve on this issue is the massive marketing of camo. I've been hunting for years without it and just use tried and true basics. I don't think I need a wardrobe of camo. I get a big kick when I'm at the airport in S'toon in the fall and see all the Buckmaster wannabes get off the plane in their oh so fashionable camo outfits.

Camo Scammo !
Ha!!

You didn't see me!!

My cheap surplus CadPat makes me INVISIBLE.....

just like tequila!!:dancingbanana:

I am guilty. I just spent 1000.00 dollars on a brand new shiny Tikka T3 because I think I need a stainless steel/lightweight gun in .338 Win Mag. And on a side not I made a trade for a Husqvana Model 1000 in .270 the same day. Both guns arrived the same day. I have not touched the Tikka T3 I have been tinkering and playing with the 53 year old Husky instead......

Go figure eh!

I think the newest gadgets are great, having said that I don't rush out and buy them all. I think why so many of us "smart" and "not-so smart" (I won't say which category I fall in) hunters fall for these gadgets is because hunting season is so short. Anytime we feel we can 'research' and purchase the latest and greatest it gives us just a little of the high that we know as hunting.

I also think the newest gadgetry is great for the sport. I don't think we would draw nearly as many new hunters to the sport (addiction) of hunting if we didn't have the newest flashy, ###y stuff. If outdoor stores only stocked red plaid and Marlins in 30-30 it wouldn't draw any attention from potential new hunters.

There will always be a natural progression of new hunters to salivate and purchase the latest greatest, and then slowly learn to appreciate the classics. It just takes some longer than others.:p

Hunters in general? Well I hunt myself, but I'm not too sure about some, especially when owners of hunting stores tell me "I can't import that [Remington 700P]" "Why is that?" "Cause it's a sniper rifle and they're illegal".

My kids are gonna hate me when they have to get rid of all that stuff I have bought, tried and put in the corner. But as long as we are having fun doing it, thats all that should count.

When the punk rockers used to wear camo my foreman asked me if he were to drive over one in the city, could he just tell the police he didn't see him. Take a look at any hunting book published before the 80's.

Most of them wore "lumber jackets" or "stoner jackets"as we used to call them, those checkered flanel jackets/shirts. I'm sure that the people who hunted before camo were just as succesful. Except maybe the turkey hunters;)

All you need is a good gun and a good hunter behind it.

BUT if all these new fangled trinkets make YOU feel more confident, then it might be usefull.

'jack shirts?
Like this?:D

Although I have been known to wear some camo, it is more out of habit of wearing a comfortable pair of pants than anything.
For years I wore a combat shirt because it was comfortable.
I have a set of predator camo that is comfortable also.
But I prefer checkered 'jack shirts, and/or Carhart bib overalls...

How many hunters here are fisherman too? Now there is a group....

I'm sure we all have drank the Kool Aid at some time but I learned to distinguish products and strategies when it came to shows, endorsements and celebrities years ago. It is the substance, not the message, that I am interested in.

I see myself as an adventureous but careful consumer who, for the most part, relies on anecdotal evidence and my own experiences as a guide to where I spend my money. I am intrigued enough to look at new technologies but not susceptible enough to believe that they offer the sure shortcut to improved success.

I suffer from reverse snobbery, all my stuff looks like #### ( works well ) and that is my way of feeling superior.

When some guy shows up with his fancy fishing vest and all the newest gadjets hanging from it and the ultra light graphite rod, etc. I take a positive pride in my old box of tackle and fiberglass rod with half the eyes missing.

Same with my hunting crap.

Nice to feel so superior while being such a cheap skate.

Those that regularly have a frezer full seem to be.

Up to them how they go about it & what they spend.

No matter what, you should be warm, dry & comfortable,
it's more enjoyable than the other way.
Wool, not denim ... cotton's worthless when wet.

My friend is a salesman, he sells whatever he feels like selling at the moment. His credo is to 'Sell #### to stupid people' and he hates the smart ones, i.e. my guts lol! Whenever we meet, he says something along the lines that I am a disaster for North American economy...

just use your stealthy primal predatory skills, like the jungle pigmy guys. That's how you put stuff down. all the gizmos just take your attention off the task at hand. When i get into the zone when i'm hunting i just use ears eyes and feet, and gut instinct. I use a good rifle but i could get the job done with anything really.

My next rifle is gonna be a bow i made with rocks and sticks.

We hunters may make some not so smart purchases but you compare that to the kinda money I see people blow on new vehicles, with gadgets they can't even understand, never mind just useless just about every day at work I don't think we should feel too bad .An $800 gps might not be nessesary but it beats blowin $50,000 on a truck with leather interior. Every fall on the first snowfall I have to explain to some customer that I can't fix the brakes on their car they aren't broken it's called ABS and it is supposed to make that noise. I think I will go by some camo.
