Are hunting rifles over scoped?

For gophers, my favorite scope on a. 22 is a 6x fixed AO scope. I've used all kinds in the last 40 years. This just works really well.. I leave it at 30 yards and rarely have to touch the AO ring at other ranges.

For larger game, 3-9 set at 3x works well for 15-300 yards. I don't shoot past that. I would be just as happy with a fixed 4x.

Yup we are definitely overscoped. But everything else we have is too much as well. It's the age we live in. How many 500HP trucks do you see being driven by guys that don't have anything to pull? The marketers have an easy time selling gear to the mindless.

I find it most useful to have 3x magnification for very hundred yards, based on the longest shooting I’ll be doing. So a 3x is fine in I’m not shooting past 100 with any regularity, 9x if I’m going out to 300 but no more, etc.
