Are Norinco 1911 grip bushings a metric thread?

Hey guys

I'm thinking of putting some 3/16" thin grips on my Wife's Norinco 1911-A1 but I keep reading on American forums that the grip bushings are some kind of weird thread pattern.

Is this true?

I like our American cousins, but sometimes they do silly stuff with anything that isn't 100% USA made like shoot 308 diameter bullets out of 311 bores "because it's a 30 caliber".

Are there any fixes other than ordering up oversized bushings and re-tapping the frame to accept them? I've heard that filing down the old bushings to fit the thinner grips might be an option (would need short screws too).

Thanks for the help.

Weird thread pattern?

AFAIK they are just metric (the bushings into the frame).

I'd file them down and run short screws (or filed screws)

FWIW the standard (US) grip screws into a 1911 are weird enough threads 0.236 x 60TPI

I've changed out these on both my Norinco 1911s I've had, Brownell's has a very inexpensive kit that gives you the correct drill bit, tap and bushings to allow you to put ANY standard 1911 grip onto. I'd suggest it as the factory grip screws have a tendency to either break off in the bushing or bring the bushing out with them, and the screw is still frozen in it. I had this problem with 2 of my grip screws; also the addition of this kit really makes things easier for you or anyone that owns the gun later on. Simple job also.

Isn't that tapping oversize to .255 x 60TPI and using oversized bushings?

Is there enough meat in the metric threaded hole to re-thread to standard bushing size of .236 x 60?

The kit is intended for drilling out and replacing stripped out threads. The bushing is oversized but uses standard screws to hold the grip. If the OP wants a quick fix, file down the existing bushings and install shorter screws.

They do offer slim grip bushings in the oversized tap diameter, and sell a tap for those as well.

As for the "regular" 1911 tap working on the Norinco hole, I can't say.
