Are observers welcome in IPSC club matches?

Hi,

I am taking the Black Badge course in April, and now I am still in the text book stage. There are a couple of club matches and/or qualifier matches in the Vancouver area such as Poco and TMSA.

I wonder whether I can pop in and observe a match when there is one.

And are there any safe areas around the match that I can watch but not intervene?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

sure u can.... always stay behind the Range Officer.... better yet just ask the R.O. where you can observe from...

Sure. And you'll likely find that at least one shooter will take you to the bullseye range and let you shoot their race gun too. Shooters, of all disciplines, are, generally, like that. Help the new guy. Asking about equipment is not impolite nor forward. But you have to ask. Most shooters will go out of their way to help an FNG who asks politely.

Every match I've been to has welcomed spectators, and they don't mind if you grab some patches and help patch targets after each shooter either :D (It's also a good way to figure out the scoring system.)

I went to an IDPA match at the SFFGC club last fall and helped out. Standing around, might as well help patch. They let me take scores for the afternoon.
Learned a ton by watching and talking to people like Repete, Tritium, SteveS etc. Wrote my RPAL and waiting right now for the mail.

Now I want to see what IPSC has to offer and volunteered to help setup the day before the April match at the club and help on the next day as well.

I figure, you learn a lot more by helping out and it gets you in good with the guys.

Call the match coordinator and ask if you can help in any way. If they can use you, you learn a lot and it breaks down the barrier of being a stranger.

After I took my BB course, I went to a match to observe (match was full) and found it took the stress off my first match. Everyone was helpfull and answered all I had to ask.

People generally like to see new shooters.

Next qualifier in the lower mainland is on the Easter weekend Sat april 7 at Poco, Sunday April 8 at Thompson. Bring eye and ear protection. Let shooters know you're new to the game and they'll answer any questions you've got. Shooting starts early:popCorn:

YOu might want to bring rain gear and an umbrella too!:bangHead:

I was wondering about this as well , I am now finished the training portion of the BB course and need to shoot a match in order to finish and my father asked me if he could come and watch. He is an avid hunter but I have not yet gotten him involved somehow with IPSC and introduce him to the various people who I have met should some of them be in attendance as well as meet others. I think he is of the belief that this is a young mans only sport, hobby, past time, obsession. I realize that there are a plethora of safety concerns as well as political reasons why there would be no open door policy to the matches for specs but I also cannot ignor how introducing new people to it is also going to play a major part in the sports survival and growth potential.

Quite the contrary, all of the clubs in our area have an open door
policy for just that reason. there are those who will never see the
true sport of IPSC/CDPA/IDPA etc. but many newcomers have either
joined the sports from just observing or have a new appreciation for
the type of competition we have chosen. In my experience I have
yet to see someone turned off after watching a match. As far as your
father is concerned age does not really play a major factor in IPSC.
Though my son may not agree, check out your Sitrep's you will be
surprised to see how many seniors and super seniors are shooting.
Oh and one last thing, don't ever under estimate the older shooter's
most times they will hand you your Butt on a platter:eek: :D
Good luck
