Am I correct in assuming that the only reason that the colt M4, S&W M&P15-22 etc.. in .22LR are only on the restricted list because of the way they look? The specs on barrel length, overall length and magazine capacity are all basically the same as the Remington VTR, SR22 etc..

Welcome aboard, new guy!

We can always tell the new guys here, they are the ones that expect gun laws to actually make sense.
You have to keep in mind that gun laws are made by people that hate guns.
Can you imagine aviation laws being drafted by people that are afraid to fly?

Never gave the laws too much thought before, all the shooting I did was shotgun/ skeet and "conventional" looking target rifles. Now that I'm getting into the pistol side of things, I'm gaining a new appreciation for the arbitrary nature of the current laws. My current favorite exception would be a carbine chambered for 9mm that takes a glock .40 magazine. 12, maybe 13 rounds in what is essentially a rifle that would be limited to 5 rounds if it was chambered in .223. It's good to know that if I fall and hit my head, I would still have a future in politics.

Yup... it is incredibly rediculous... a whole spiderweb of contradicting laws in place to look like the "man" has done something to reduce crime while all it has done was increase beauracracy (sp?) and kept some otherwise unemployable people employed... looking over the shoulders of the innocent and law abiding hoping to catch them in a "catch 22" for some bullsh!t papercrime...

Thanks for reminding me of the stupidity... the S&W AR15-22 is the perfect example of the perfect 22 for the kids to plink away at squirrels/chipmunks at their leasure, but instead, we are forced to take it to a range and punch paper...

Frothing at the mouth... over and out.

Even they are neutered to 10 rounds.

I'm a very indifferent person, but the one that got me was when Chiappa released their .22lr M4. At the time it was totally legal to have the stock 28 round magazine, as it was for a rimfire rifle.

Then Chiappa goes and makes a pistol version of that same M4... so all of a sudden, months later, when people already have the 16" barrel rifle, the magazines become immediately prohibited devices as they are pistol variant magazines with capacities over 10 rounds... So I don't know if it would automatically, and proactively make everyone criminals but a bunch of people had prohibited devices overnight when the day before it wasn't.

Since I'm on these forums a lot I got notice quickly and got my magazines pinned the next day. If I was some technologically inept person who could never find out that information then one day they could get caught with something that, I feel, is unjust.

Just a note here people. The stupidity factor is not confined to the various gun regulations we have to navigate in order to pursue our chosen sport. The stupidity extends far beyond that. Common sense is an oxymoron where a bureaucrat is involved.

Just to be a little more specific: The reason that the firearms the OP mentioned are restricted lies with the Regulations (S.84-117) of the Criminal Code. Part 2, S. 2 decrees any M-16 or variant as restricted. Subsection (w) specifically includes "any 22-calibre rimfire variant" and then names a few. The RCMP have broadly interpreted this section to include the S&W, etc. Like all regulations this one could be changed with a stroke of the pen (in the form of an OIC) if the Minister in charge (the brilliant genius Vic Toews) so desired.

What I could never understand is that guns such as the M&P 15-22 are restricted in Canada because of how they look but you can get full metal airsoft guns that look spot on to any real steel rifle/pistol out there.

They are not restricted because of how they look. They are restricted because they are deemed by the RCMP to be .22 calibre variants of the AR/M16 platform. Such variants are specifically identified in the CCC Regulations (see my post above) as belonging to the restricted class. This makes no sense on a number of levels, but as has been pointed out ad nauseum, Canadian gun laws are fundamentally absurd and immune to any intellectually respectable justification.
