was looking around today and out of the three shops I was in, twice I was told the Remingtons on the market are " garbage " now, being made in China or some similar far off land...any thoughts on this ? it was kind of dissapointing...

Finish on the "Express Models" is garbage.

Have seen more than a few turn orange in some light rain/snow after only a couple hours. Seems the only fix is to soack the entire gun in oil for a couple hours, and keep her wet.

Remington in general has gotten worse over the years, but I wouldn't say garbage.

That said I would buy a Mossberg 500 over the express any day of the week.

The nicest budget shotgun these days is the new Winchester SXP. I just bought one, and wouldn't even consider the Rem or Mossbergs after this.

I bought an 870 express in 20 ga a little while ago and I was very disappointed when I unpacked it. I didn't realize there were difft levels of 870 (not to that extreme level anyway) it seems to shoot fine but it is no comparison to my older 870 12 ga.

Its too bad Remington has let them go down hill like that. I have an express that was purchased in the late 80's / early 90's and its solid and well built like you'd expect an 870 to be. From what I understand the express came out as a more affordable version of the wing-master with Birch stock instead of Walnut and matte finished metal instead of the bluing.

It's maybe worth mentioning that Norinco and Dominion Arms both sell Chinese 870 clones, those might be the ones made in China that you were told about.

A friend of mine bought one a while ago! He likes it! But compared to my hatsan the build quality is sub par! And almost the same price for my semi auto! I was pretty shocked at how rough it felt! Finish wise and action feel!

I bought one with the rifle sights on it. First day out, the front sight fell off. The second time out, got a little rain, wiped it off but not the front sight too well I guesd. And now it has a bit of rust. Shoots well though and cycles nice.

When I phoned Remington about the sight falling off, they sent me a new one.

i owned an express, rough inside and out didn't cycle cheap federal target shells well. inside is loaded with burs and the outside looks like donkey ####. i can literally see the marks from when it was a piece of ductile steel its that rough. DON'T waste your money on an express, go with a dominion arms which is chinese yet way better fit and finish or an older wing master. Also mossberg would be suffice.

I don't know for sure about the new 870s but I bought a 700 7mm rem mag last year and the quality was pretty bad. The bolt was loose and was a pain in the ass to cycle rounds. I switched to Browning for my primary hunting rifle and I couldn't be happier.

I have a newer Express with the laminate stock. Works fine but not quite as well finished as some of the older guns. And I did have issues with mild surface rust initially. Liberal application of G96 seems to keep it at bay quite easily. I'd say if you're going to get one, buy in person and give it a real good once over before forking over the cash. There are definitely a higher number of lemon type Remlins (or Marlingtons) than there used to be. I was about to snag a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington last week until I got an up close look at the woodwork. Pressed checkering is never great, but if you miss the first time, throw it out, don't just smoosh another layer over top. Yuck!

I bought an 870 express tactical this past year and it is awesome. Nice finish (very durable looking), no rust even after being in the rain and just leaving it to dry. The gun functions flawlessly.

Would definitely buy another.

Some here are confusing the old (pre-merger) Express with what's available now.....TOTALLY different guns! My pre-merger 870 is a wing master in ever aspect except wood (birch vs walnut) and bluing (the express looks almost parkerized)... And it's as bulletproof as my 870 Police. The new express' though? You couldn't pay me to trust a hunt to one.
