Are savage axis any good?

I bought one in 223 just for sh its and giggles. I wasn't expecting much so wasn't let down. The gun was ok for 3 shot groups but it heated up pretty quick and started chucking rounds. I ended up modifying the trigger spring which brought down the trigger pull, chucked the barbie doll plastic fantastic stock and bought a wooden thumbhole stock. Next was to find a used Savage heavy barrel in 223 and put that on it. Bedded the stock as well. Now it shoots 1/2 moa at 300 meters all day long. Ya maybe the action isn't up to A+ standards but with a decent barrel and stock it can stand shoulder to shoulder with the big boys.

Would have been cheaper to just buy a decent gun in the first place but this was way more fun and I already had a safe full of tack drivers.

So the bottom line is if you are just hunting with it, the AXIS is plenty good enough IMHO.
 
Tough to beat a Savage Axis at their price point . Very accurate , light , and reliable ; but often comes with a 3 to 9 scope package , and the scope may not be the greatest . Keep an eye out for a stainless one with the adjustable trigger ; and you will have a rifle that will last for many , many years .

these days it’s actually pretty easy, they’re priced far too high for what you get these days. Suthers post sums it up perfecty. The guy comparing it to a Corolla is smokin crack, more like a tercel. I couldn’t imagine keeping the axis over the t3 and then putting 4500 ends through it. Accurate, but that’s it full stop. Very, very close to the bottom of the barrel.

I've been checking out that site for something lefty in 308

Nothing wrong with a tercel. My 95 still runs great!

Gonna be hard to beat $400ish after the rebate for a bolt action 223, especially because most of the other budget options aren't available in lefty (eg rem 783, Howa 1500, anything Mossberg) or aren't available in 223 as a lefty (Ruger American, used Euro mauser sporters).

I've had my eye on one all month. I told myself I'm done with the Axis but $500 less a $75usd rebate makes them pretty darn attractive for a cheap plinker/rangetoy/yote rifle, because despite its many downfalls ergonomically most Axis shoot real good, and sometimes accuracy is the only thing that really matters.

Yea gonna pick up a 223 and then trigger mod it. Maybe cut barrel and recrown, see what kind of hack job I can do lol

A 110/111 or Savage 10 be more of a Corolla. But agree the Axis is a trecel. Corolla was much better than the Trecel and it was only 3 years newer.

Personally wish they still made the Stevens 200.
 
They're cheaply built meaning cheap parts and simple design. They're ugly most can agree but they shoot well and come in various calibers.
MDT makes a chassis system for them which solves the stock issue
I sold most of my savages 110s off for Remington 783 rifles as I like them much more

I have the 783 hb 16.5" 223 and the 24" hb 308 both blued finish and they hold up will. I spray and wipe down with g96 and theyve survived a couple weeks in the bush on backpack hunts with no I'll effects. However my MDT chassises they're in took a beating. I really scratched and chipped up the cerokote on the chassis of the 308
Accuracy has been great though. I had bought both with plans to rebarrel them but after shooting them they shot so well I kept them factory chamerings

I've got 2 of them as well, a 308 and a 7 rem mag (the 7 mag is bedded in a Boyds laminate thumbhole and is crazy accurate with 140 TTSX's), both are very accurate rifles but living in a rainforest area both have had light surface rust a few times.
 
Not the one I owned. POS. Sold out. Discrepancy in the receiver, even the gunsmith said get rid of it. And that was straight from factory.

I hunt northern Ontario. Likely much easier on metal finishes lol. Cerokote could be a solution for your rifles?
 
Just picked up a Axis 2 XP in 6.5CM as a backup/alternate deer rifle for my Savage 110 in .308.

Just arrived so haven't shot it, but the price was forsure right with the father's day sale at SFRC and also sent off for the $75USD mail in rebate.

Was way too good to pass up. Also, Cabela's had some great deals on 6.5CM ammo (Norma 140SP and Barnes 120 TTSX)
