I think you could be correct, If they keep 2 models going foward they will likely update the C1 to at least keep up with the Athalon units.

I feel your pain. I once received three sets of carbide 460 S&W dies, all within a couple days of each other!! Late night on Nutz with waaay too much Irish whiskey!! That $50 hazardous fee is probably because of that highly cancerous battery contained in the Garmin. You won’t be disappointed with the Garmin.

the C2 has other software features that make it better, and with the reduced price the C1 is direct competition to the Athlon unit
or is the Athlon better than the C1 ?

Time will tell as far as durability but from the reviews I've seen comparing the 2 the Athlon is less expensive, faster to reset, comes with a case, and tends to read a little faster leading some to hypothesize that it might be picking up the projectile a little bit closer.

I can’t remember all the upgrades to the C2. I think the C1 and Athlon are comparable, with the Athlon being faster.

I still use my giant orange pumpkin. 🫣 I won’t think of upgrading until it breaks, because it does everything I need.
 
The C2 is very quick registering shots and can be used at a rate of fire that most people will not be shooting at.
It can also be used with Garmin watches and has the ability to stop and restart sessions so if your shooting multiple guns you can let a barrel cool and go on to another rifle and come back later and restart the session for the first gun.
They also beefed up the case to make it more suitable for direct mounting to a rifle.
 
The one critique I read of the C1 was of not being able to continue or add to a previous string, making it difficult to use more than one rifle at a time on a range day. Didn't think of that, but once you read it and realize, it makes sense and now is a 'need' lol
The C2 allows this
 
Picked up a C1 from Canelas this morning. I started with a Chrony Beta, upgraded to a Magnetospeed V3 a few years ago and now the Garmin. I'll have to try to find some new reloaders to off load the Chrony and Magnetospeed!

I think I'll keep the Chrony, and sell the FX. Likely cost more to ship my F1, then what someone would pay. Plus good for shot shells.

Even if you add another gun?

Are you using the App or stand alone?
 
There's no denying that these new pocket sized radars are quick and easy, so easy data nerds likely set them up for every shooting session and with growing AI capability a guy's agent could track velocity changes along with temperature and altitude and anything else that might change things, then extrapolate that towards future corrections based on a mountain of data points.....

There is also no denying that the new units have brought the price of the old tech way down.
If you don't want to spend $700 on the new units you can pick up a used Magnetospeed V3 for around $200 and make due until the next technological leap forwards. Or a big Orange Labradar if you want less expensive radar.

I could see commercial ranges or fancier clubs offering chrono tech as part of the rental/ club equipment at some point if the tech proves durable and keeps dropping in price.
 
Watch FB Marketplace. Not often but I found a BNIB Garmin C1 for $595. I offered $400 and was accepted. 1 hour and bit drive each way but worth it. Now, I am very comfortable on FB Marketplace. Not all are but deals to be found if paying attention ruin.
 
I started out using the clubs Pact chrono, played with a CED as well and then bought a Shooting Chony; I can’t remember the model but it calculated all kinds of things and had a printer. At the time I had it in a fitted case and thought I’d never need to spend money on anything like this again in my lifetime…if I recall correctly I put out about $400 or $500 then for everything.
Then Labradar showed up and with more disposable income I just had to have it and parted with about $1200 IIRC.
The fantasy of what it promised quickly crashed into reality and I was less than thrilled with my spendy “upgrade”…
I sold the Chony for a $100 and gave away the Labradar (I tried selling it for $200 and couldn’t get a bite).
When the Garmin first came out I was sceptical that the gushing reviews were honest but after being thoroughly disappointed with the LabRadar I dropped my money as hope is eternal.
The Garmin is all that and a bag of chips…it just works, every time.
No doubt the newer version has added benefits but until this one dies I see no reason to justify the spend, but if I didn’t have one I’d go for the upgraded model in a heartbeat.
But all that said if I still had my old chrono it would still be working and I’d be dollars ahead but gathering the data would feel like a very tedious chore.
 
Grabbed my Garmin from the purolator drop off today. Cannot wait to give it a test next week.

Curious what my 7/8oz slugs chrony at with using the powder charge for 1-1/8oz.

I cut the crimp off 7.5 target loads, dump shot, cast shot into slugs. Insert the slug and recrimp.
