Are Small Pistol Magnum and Small Rifle Primers Safe in 9mm?

Safe - yes. Will a striker pistol ignite 100% MAybe.

The thicker choices like CCI 450 and Remington 7.5 can present light strikes but they are also very thick and hard primers (.025"). CCI 400, S&B SR, Murom SR (.020") Winchester small rifle (.021"), Federal small rifle (.019") and Federal small rifle match (.0225") all work fine with stock springs. Regardless however, I have been installing the heaviest striker and hammer springs I can find for my handguns for many years now.

According to Speer/CCI Technical Services - Both the CCI 550 Small Pistol Magnum and CCI 400 Small Rifle primers are identical in size. Both primers use the same cup metal and share the same cup thickness. Both primers use the same primer compound formula and same amount of primer compound. They can be used interchangeably.

Done this many times. No issues or fail to fire

Not to take this south but a buddy had pistol primer issues with a .44 mag Redhawk. Can he swap out for rifle primers? If so mag or standard?

Yup, they are the same primer! Some guys will argue that but as you said CCI confirms it.

Large rifle primers are too tall to use in a LP primer pocket. Any LP primer should stand up to any .44 magnum load. If he is having issues with piercing (I assume) the solution lies elsewhere.

Oops - already Answered.

44 Mag are large pistol primers. Unlike Small Pistol / Rifle, Large Rifle primers and Large Pistol primers are not the same size and not interchangable.

I used large pistol with rifle casings in the past without any problems.

There is often one way compatibility, if your firing pin will reach then no problem. Using LR in an LP pocket usually means you won't get the round into battery.
Also the possibility of a slam fire with a high primer. My 44 rem mag gets used my contenders , Raging Bull and Ruger semi. I have never experienced a slam fire yet, my primers are seated below flush. I have used small rifle primers in pistol cartridges if the manufacturer said they are the same dimensions. SR primers are used with ball powders in my 357 mag and 357 REM max with excellent results.

The large pistol primers are no as tall as the large rifle, and will fit into a large rifle primer pocket without protruding. As long as the firing pin is long enough for a proper strike, no problem.

Large rfile primers are taller than the depth of a large pistol pocket, and will protrude; definitely not a situation you want to be in.

Nice, I didn't know that.

Can I ask why reloaders consider their Frankenstein concoctions to be more desirable over the major OEMs stringently researched products?
