I'm thinking of having another rifle built in the future and was looking at the .338 Federal. Is the action on the Winchester 100 or 88 strong enough to hold the pressure and are the mags able to hold and feed the .338 federal as well ?.
Thanks, 88

The only problem you may encounter is finding any parts if your OLD 88 breaks down. It has been long discontinued.

I'm not worried about parts as I've got enough to do me a lifetime so there's no prob there.
Still waiting on some more feedback before I start asking my custom smith !!

There is also a place that ships parts up from the US they did as of last week when I asked and they have enough parts according to the inventory list that they can build several HUNDRED complete and working guns in every caliber available. They might not be made anymore but the inventory of parts are still plentiful as most people with an 88 or 100 rarely have to fix anything. I'm sure there are lemons out there. I'd like to get another one for parts just incase but for another $500 I just can't afford to yet. Let me know how it works out.

You're probably better served by modifying the 100 or 88 to feed 200 grain .308 bullets. Same result on game (=dead animal), lots cheaper.

Of course, sometimes a custom rifle is a good enough reason.

To answer the question, yes they're strong enough. In a 100 or an 88 or even a Savage 99, you now would have a most excellent fast action BG smacker. Prefer the .338-06 but the Federal .338 within 300 yards or so is just fine.

I'm not familiar with .338 Fed balistics but would it be better than the 358 Winny M-100 he already has??
