The trigger is acceptable, but the sights are another story. The rear sights have a tendency to loosen up during firing, although some people have had better luck than others. You can upgrade to M14 or M1 Garand rear sight parts, which will solve any issues you might have.

One other issue to keep in mind is that the barrel is sometimes not indexed properly to the receiver, and this will interfere with proper sight alignment. Fortunately, this is fairly easy to correct if you have access to the correct tools, or a gunsmith.
 
Yup the sights are a piece of krap, but you only need to replace them if you are competing (read: repeatability) with them. If you are scoping your M14, save your money for an ARMS# 18.

And if you are really determined to replace them with M1 Garand sights, all you need is the elevation & windage knob. The base, aperture and spring cover will work perfectly fine.

Indexing the barrel is only a 3 minute job with the right tools and vise. Not a big problem.

Enjoy the addiction. Start shopping for some milsurp 7.62mm ammo and maybe a USGI glass stock.

Trigger is not bad. Mine is clean and crisp, breaks nicely. Sights are poorly made IMHO because they are not as "sharp" as the M-1 Garand. And I think they wobble a bit under fire.
 
They are ok I guess, but if you can get your hands on a Garand peep sight like I did or National Match..You're definitely in better business country...

O.K. call me stupid, but what is indexing, and how is it fixed with the right tools & a vise?

Just curious is all... kinda thinking I might just pick me up an M305 some time in the not too distant future!

I think indexing is getting the barrel screwed in the reciever perfectly upright, so the alignment of the front and read sight is perfect.

I guess to make that job, you'll need some kind of action block to hold the rifle, and some sort of barrel wrench.

When threading-on a barrel, the final little bit of rotation usually takes a great degree of force (i.e. you need a good sized lever). Believe me, the barrel will remain properly indexed. On the M14S/M-305, there's also a barrel set-screw for good measure.

my m14s has had no issues with loose or otherwise unacceptable sight movement and the trigger is good by semi auto standards. The FIRST mod i would do to any m305/m14s is to shim and unitize the gas system prior to any barrel indexing or monkeying with the sights. It was quite a difference on paper once the shim job was done, I am exceptionally pleased with my latest m14s and it has been very easy for me to forget it was made in china :D
hopefully this next batch from marstar will be of similar quality.
 
I was just abusing a pepper popper at the range. Standing at 100 yards I managed to hit him more often than not with my Franken-14. I consider that pretty good. If I was getting serious with the rifle I'd swap the sights, but seeing as I'm not...
