Hey guys

I have searched the forum and haven't been able to find anything on entry level LH rifles.

I'm trying to find a decent first hunting rifle available in 308 under $600 (less s better).

Any recommendations ??

Thanks

AP

Savage and tikka are two I looked at recently. I ended up spending a little more for a Ruger scout, but nearly went with a tikka s3.

Savage is a good choice. You will still have a couple hundred for a good scope.

Decide where you are hunting. If it is brush with few long shots a good lever action is better.

Maybe consider a milsurp. 6.5x55 or 7x57 are good calibers and have great trajectories for longer shots.

Forget entry-level. Not worth the money IMHO. Go to the Tradex site, or EE, and find a quality, lightly used hunting rifle for about the same money, or less!
Entry-level, more often than not, means junk. Sorry, but that's the truth. Savage does field a quality product, but I'll leave it at that.

savage you can get either the axis or the 11/111 package deal, tikka has the t3, and Remington has the 700sps, Or you could go used. Personally I went with a savage 111 in 270 back before they had the combo gun, it will do 1/2 moa 3 shoot groups at 100yd. Savage would be your best bet to come in under the 600 mark both the T3 and 700 are more likely come in around 7-800 with a scope

Just bought a Savage 11 Trophy Hunter XP package last week in 22-250 from Wholesale Sports. $535.00 all in. It comes with a Weaver 3-9X40 scope. I am upgrading mine to compensate for old eyes, but it should be quite adequate to get you going for now, and maybe even a lot longer than that...

EDIT: Hey, that was post #1. No longer a CGN virgin...!

Savage if you're tied to your budget, but if you can put together a few more shekels, Cabela's carries the Weatherby Vanguard S2 in a couple different package deals ($700-$900 depending on what kind of scope you're partial to). The Savage will not steer you wrong, my old non-Accutrigger 111 package 30-06 is 11 now and still gets used every fall, but going for the Weatherby is like night and day.

As mentioned savage is a great choice, I think weatherby also sells a left handed package, in the vanguard series, if you want to kick it up a notch.

Ditch the left handed idea and do what myself and many other lefties to. Shoot right handed rifles. Many more better choices that way.
I did that when I was a kid and it works, true. But now that I'm buying myself a rifle for hunting, I didn't want to have the inconvenience. It took some looking and there are definitely fewer choices, but I found a lot of options to choose from. I even found a nice CZ 452 lefthanded for small game.

Unfortunately the Vangard does not come in left handed. I am a lefty and a Remington fan but not the sps so for an entry level I would go for the Savage and probably the International trophy hunter package in left hand but I would avoid the axis (for me). Lots of guys will say just use a right handed rifle but let a right hander use your left handed rifle and the inevitable comment is boy this is awkward.

Entry level just means it isn't as pretty. You need to decide how much money you want to spend first.
Hard to be a Savage. Look into one of the Packages. The scopes are low end, but serviceable.

The trick I found is getting from "the manufacturer lists it on their website" to "here's a place that will take my money and ship me the rifle." Just keep looking, you will find options. A few things have passed by on the EE here, and a few links I found:
Savage Trophy Hunter XP, 7mm-08, $600
Savage 14 American Classic, .308, $900
Tikka T3 Lite, .308, $780 (grouse river seems generally more expensive)
Savage Trophy Hunter XP, .308 win, $560
Prophet River has a number of wood stocked Tikka's in lefty, but they are over $1,000.

This is just a sampling, there are lots of other people out there with lefty bolt actions.
