I have an aquaintance here who is status and very involved with the politics in his band. He hunts and we shoot trap together, he tells me that status Indians may only hunt without licences or laws only on their treaty lands and to be able to hunt crown land or private lands off treaty lands he must like anyone else purchase a license and apply for whatever tags are necessary to hunt the area he wishes and within the confines of the law just like any non-status Indian. He also says should he wish to hunt another bands treaty area he musy secure permission and most bands require that he hunt with a member of that band and within whatever rules that band has established for their land use. This young fellow(27) is a very well informed and educated person and is actually working within the native community teaching ohers to be respectful of the resource and trying to get many of their members to change the way they hunt and fish to ensure there will always be game and fish rich areas for all including non-natives. He is a very cool individual in my opinion.
