Are there still enough gophers out at this time of year in South-West Saskatchewan to make it worthwhile to go out shooting? I'm thinking of visiting friends on their farm this weekend and I might bring my .22.

"Gophers" or Richardson's Ground squirrels tend to estivate in mid summer, avoiding the hot dry weather by staying underground. there is not enough moisture in the mature grasses to keep them hydrated, so they don't go out, since drinking water is not an option. I don't plan to shoot gophers after the end of July, not that there isn't any, but you won't see many. By September most are actually hibernating.

There might be a straggler, but for the most part the season is over. Time to concentrate on Upland and migratory birds, and big game.
